Got my Turbo Engine Now What?????
« on: May 31, 2007, 03:30:31 pm »
I just got a 1.6 Turbo motor for my 86 Golf!!!!! It is out of an earlier Jetta so it has solid lifters. It has about 35,000 miles on a complete overhaul (I know the machine shop that did the work and the mechanic who put it together both very good). What mods can I do before I install it? I remeber someone on this site (Giles?) who did fuel inj. pump modes and overhauls, is he still around. I belive this engine has a Garret turbo (overhauled also) is this a good turbo? He said to fit this in a newer body style he had to make a custom exhaust pipe, because the down pipe did not line up (1 or 2 inches to one side) are their diffrent down pipes or aftermarket pipes. I would like to run a larger exhaust system (2.5"?) do I need a muffler?
Anything else you can think of will be great :D  :?
Thanks

The exhaust system should fit without problems if you use a MK2 turbo downpipe. There are aftermarket pipes (well only one): www.passengerdiesel.com

Yes you can run a 2.5" system without any muffler or resonator, the turbo does a good job cutting down the noise level.

I've been in a car where the exhaust system ended at the downpipe that connects to the turbo. It wasn't loud at all, and the car was gutted. Mind you he wasn't hammering on it, but the RPMs were still fairly high

Mufflers are defintly overrated

Giles is still around, check the vendors section

In my N/A after i put my gasser mani on i had just the down pipe no exhaust back and it was unbearable.
But no "turbo" muffler to quiet it down. The turbo really breaks up the sound waves.

There was actually a 4X6 hole just to the right of where it exits, no smoke in the interior though which was surprising

Same reason why I decided not to run it with a DP only or to go with a side exit right behind the front wheels. Would be a PITA ar red lights lol

Heh, I ran around like that for a week or so after my exhaust rotted through. I got flipped off by no less than three semi drivers and could set off car alarms idling through a parking structure. Even with a glasspack it's bad, just not as bad.

Thanks for the info on the exhaust system. I think I get it.
Are their other things I can do??? How does pump overhauls and mods? Can I bump the boost on the turbo?

Thanks again.
