Hello all,
I was putting my new dipstick in my motor, and my friend that was with me said, "What’s that?" He isn't a car/mechanical guy (not that I can say I am :? )
So I look up, and low and behold, some nice oil on my hose, and intake coming from the Turbo's compressor side...
*** that doesn’t look good, what could it be...
Check the air filter, maybe it is really plugged up. Nope clean as a whistle...
Ok, now when I bought this the guy said He just had the turbo rebuilt.
Now the car I am sure has been sitting for a year. And I can't remember why in the heck he had the turbo rebuilt. I think he said something about, loss in power, and fuel mileage.
I might be wrong about the fuel mileage, but I am having an Issue there too. I have turned the fueling down to stock (Car is a dog), and it still is ripping through fuel. No air bubbles that i can see in the fuel line, though i bought a new filter anyway, not sure if I will change it.
Also I decide to check the reservoir for antifreeze and it was pressured up too.
I did have the fuel turn up, and hit 20lb of the turbo, for a couple sec, not that long, like hit 20 then shifted, so I am pretty sure that I didn't do any damage there...
Any way, does any one have some tips on quick things i can try to Isolate the issue(s)?
p.s. 1990 Jetta 1.6TD, +305000km on it, all original from what i know of the car.
maybe a leaky valve cover??? running 20 psi boost can greatly increase blow-by...
Valve covers leak very easily. Is the oil collecting in the valleys of the intake manifold? I think this would lean towards a leaky gasket. You should get a reusable rubber valve cover gasket and replacements cover studs.
I have no idea about the poor mileage. Could be bad injectors or something. I don't think you should be running 20 psi boost unless you are set up for it (head studs, 1.9 headgasket, etc.).
It is not coming from the valve cover, as it is coming down from the hose connected to the Turbo, down onto the intake manifold. You can see it collecting around the end of the host and its migration to the intake manifold.
I am testing the fuel milage to see if I am acctually getting bad milage or am I just expecting to much! :?
Maintnance history:
Hasn't been driven since July 26 2005
new drain plug on Oil pan - not sure km
Turbo rebuild/ IP checked - 301000
New Alternator 291000
Water pump - 290000
Glow Plugs - 209000
Power stearing - 200000
Also I now have all my part to make my boost controler so no more 20 psi
But hopfully I will beable to get up there...one day!
how much oil is being lost??? so the oil is coming from the oil feed to the turbo? or the hose that connects the compressor to the intake manifold???
if it's the latter, then you seriously need some new rings, or stop pushing 20 psi.
Those hoses are always oily. Yours might just be cracked so it is letting the oil out. If you don't have substantial oil loss I wouldn't worry about it. I would remove and inspect the hose though
