• AN (and closely related JIC) fittings were designed for connecting flared steel hydraulic tubing and the sizes correspond to the steel tube sizes in 16ths.  An 8 AN or JIC is 8/16ths or 1/2" OD tube, a 12 AN or JIC is 12/16ths or 3/4" OD tube.
