Cold start cable operation?

Alright, for most this may appear to be a dumb question, But how does the cold start cable operate on an '87 1.6td?? All I am staring at is the linkage on the engine...

There appears to be three settings. Pushed in all the way, "first click" is about 1/4" out and the full pull is about 1 1'2"

What is the normal "run" position? If run is in the middle when would you push or pull?

If run is all the way in what does the first click give you as opposed to the second one?

Assuming it is adjusted correctly:

- pushed in all the way:  normal run.. no advance, no idle increase
- first click:  timing advanced 5 degrees
- all the way out:  timing advanced 5 degrees *and* idle increased slightly... the "slightly" is adjustable

Actually...

  In - is normal operating mode...  no advance, no idle boost.
  First detent - Idle boost of approximately 200 rpm only.
  Out - an additional idle boost of 100 rpm AND 5° (crankshaft)  injection
           timing advance.

You can use it as an idle adjustment.  For example, with the A/C in high the engine vibration often increases.  Pulling the handle out slightly will result in smoother idling.

Hmmmm.... ok I stand corrected.... mine does no idle on the first click and I've adjusted the second click to be quite a bit of a bump (up to 1400) for those super cold Canadian mornings.
