Hi all, don't know if this is the right place... I was looking for a replacement TD for my '87 syncro and bought an engine without really looking at it... (I know,I know...) Turns out to be an SB coded engine...
Can anyone tell me what car it could have of come off?
What engine it is?? Main difference between this and a JX?

The only VW TD I know is the JX off the van...
This new one seems to have a lot more wiring and sensors and the IP looks pretty different too...
Also the Turbo (Immaculate, garrett T2) is water cooled? is this going to have problems when it's tipped on it's side in the van?

First thing I would like to know is how/why/what for/ all the extra sensors work... Guess I'm looking for a Haynes or something...
So what car??

Know anyone who has put one of these in a transporter??

Thanks

Its from a MK2 Golf GTD or an Audi 80

The haynes doesnt cover it My Golf is a GTD with the K14, the Bentley A2 manual partially covers the engine, not sure if the Bentley Audi 80 does

I would look in this thread for all your answers. It might not have them but it has the people who would know.

Hillshy is currently rebuilding an SB coded engine. He would be the one to ask about that.

Mr.BrickYard is a tranporter fanatic ( I understand the feeling :D ) He would be the one to ask about the install.

Ah, either I didn't read it right, or you didn't say it was a syncro when you posted on 80-90.
If it's a syncro then you won't need to notch the engine lid for the pump top, there is plenty of clearance for the pump on a syncro as the engine is mounted lower in the engine bay.

If you find a CS or KY engine with a knackered pump then take the throttle levers and cable holder off then bolt to the SB pump, or just swap the pump for a JX one for simplicity.

Keeping the SB pump would be beneficial if you want to tune the engine, if you just want to replace a worn JX with a worn SB then just swapping bits accross and blocking off the core plug on the back of the block should see you right.

Extra sensor is again 104 degrees C, on the water pipe feeding the turbo, it clicks a relay on at 104 degrees and sets the auxilliary water pump going stopping oil burning and bubbling away in the turbo when the engine is shut off during it's heat soak period when the engine gets hotter before it gets cooler (due to no water pump operation).

Euro number plates? I have a plentiful supply of Brickwerks branded black surrounds, and maybe get you a pair of old UK numberplates if you want from an old van.

Thanks, this is a great help...

No, I didn't mention it... always think everyone on 80-90 have syncros...?

Might be a possibility of a re-ring? took the head off last night, no cracks between the valves and the piston are in good nick, (100x's better than the JX) but a thick layer of "soot" on everything?? Really soft, wipes off clean with a finger... the intake valves have a build up of oil and crap on base of the stems but it's also soft and "fresh" and the stems are bright, no discolouration... Cylinders are pretty shiny...

Two of the head bolts were rusty?? not seen that before, (but it has been in a shed for over a year...) Gasket seemed all in one piece but a bit of water staining, underneath, around the pot with the rusty bolts. Found a piece of rubber, about 1 x half inch in one of the corner oil ports on the block?? Maybe a bit of sump gasket?? Haven't taken the sump off yet...

I want to keep the SB pump as the JX pump is on my other NA van (it's a bit sticky anyway and needs some attention so I think I'll leave it there for now...) I've still got the old CS pump, which I knackered trying to overhaul and seems to have run out of suck, so I've got all the bits... Tuning sounds good... I'll cross that bridge when it's all in and tickin'

The injectors on the JX are 201B and the SB ones are 201R... Can I mix and match?? (if some of 201R's are knacked)

So... time to go get black again... Thanks...

Yeah, you are right Andrew...

Since yesterday I went :x and decided to spend some money  I can get a pro-shop to polish the crank, new bearings all round, rings, new valve guides etc.etc. and put it all back together for 650e (440quid) and it'll come back clean and green :D

This is the second engine and third time I've had one out in the last 12 months (2 vans) so it has to last a couple of years...

Anyone tried these?? They are offering a full set of injectors for 155e http://www.dieselsend.de/duesen.shtml (Combination KCA30S36/4 FLAG + HERZOG nozzle) without any exchange or surcharge. These are brand new... last time out I got a set from Volks Apart in London, (Genuine Bosch rebuilds from India??) turned out OK? in the end

According to this the injector for the JX or SB engine are the same??
More confused... :?
