Humm, y do not have a great deal to make with a 1.6 pump on a TDI engine, keep the timing at 2mm and drive with, nothing other to make....Probably 40-50HP maximum. That takes anything other that a specific DI pump for these engines.I have some mechanical 10mm pump in stock adapted for the TDI, good for daily driving and good for 130-140HP.
I've got a 97 tdi 1.9 with a mechanical pump from a 86 td jetta. I set the timing @1mm of lift at tdc. I couldn't get it to fire at all. I rechecked the valve timing, pump timing, fuel delivery, and everything else I could think of. I finally tryed advancing the timing and got it to run well @2 mm lift at tdc. I'm thinking that the direct injection injectors open at a higher pressure than the 86 indirect injectors so they open later in the stroke - therefore retarding the injection. Have any of you who have made the conversion to mechanical pumps experienced this? How do I time the pump and what degree do I time it too? It seems like a crap shoot and I'd rather not have any holes in the top of my pistons!! Thanks! Norm
