alright i have a 84 turbo diesel 1.6, it has a KKK turbo, but not sure if its a k14 or k24, whats the difference? and are they much different than a k26? and how do you adjust the boost? i found a threaded shaft in the middle of the wastegate with a nut on it, and a 3mm allen wrench fits in the shaft,do i tighten the shaft or loosen it to increase boost? or is it possible to put a boost controller on it to adjust from inside the car? thanks for your help!

Always shorten the shaft to increase boost. This will increase the pre-load on the diaphragm spring and make it require more load to start moving!
A bleed valve can be used as well, this will hide a percentage of the boost from the diaphragm and have a similar effect, although having long lines inside the car will theoretically give boost spikes.
Best to shorten the rod by 1 turn, test, and repeat until you have the desired boost level.. You need a guage.

Being a mk1 it is most likely a K14, it is a smaller turbo then the K24 and will build boost at much lower RPMs. I don't know about K26s

really? All of my post 90 TDs have been K24s and I've heard that the mk1s had the K14s and Eco diesels always came with the K14

def a K24 or T3.
A k14 would be far more suitable for a 1.6L though.

A stock '84 would have the K24. The K14 was not used until '90. The K26 would be WAY TOO BIG for a stock 1.6TD.

Why would the k14 be better? Would that be for quicker spool and more low end boost? Both of my MF 1.6TD's came with a t3 and k24, respectivly and not as a twin set up of course.

you got it the 1.6 in stock form with a t3 or k24 is to laggy i think almost any of the turbos that came on the 1.9 would behave amazingly on a 1.6. I would love to try a k03 on my daily 1.6.....hmm maybe i will.

My 83 Rabbit Turbo Diesel has the K24. I like it , but yes there is substantial lag.

i find that there isn't too much lag... once the engine is warmed right up, the lag is only about 1-2 seconds at most. i can only see the turbo shaft wearing down quite a bit from that kind of abuse though!!! hehe
