Low end torque 1.9
« on: March 08, 2007, 02:52:08 am »
Hi folks.
I have added another car to the lineup. It is a Golf GTD -94 with the 1.9 Td engine. Some previous owner has added an intercooler to the otherwise stock (have not found any tweaks) engine.
But. The engine feels powerless and has low torque from idle to about 2000 rpm, the turbo really kicks in at around 2000 and off it goes.
Is there any adjustments to be made to get more low end torque out of the engine, it is a little uncomfortable to drive.
I have had several 1.6 TD powered Golf Mk2's, and they have all pulled very  strongly from 1000 rpm up.
Would this be a pump issue? The engine is solid and in very good condition, but the low end torque should be better, I think.
Any advice and comment will be appreciated.

Hey:

Did the other Golf's u drove, had intercooler's as well ??

Adding an intercooler increases boost lag, because of the added length of the air inducted/pressured circuit.

Normally by adding an intercooler u should increase fuel delivery by turning the fuel delivery screw 1/4 of a turn or slightly more.

Speak up.

Regards

Oh yes, I have owned 5 Golf VW turbodiesels (TD) before this one. No intercoolers on these, exept for the model 2002 TDI that is the family's daily driver used by my wife.
The 1.6 TD's have all replied very rapidly on throttle, and this 1.9 TD is very lazy indeed. However, when the gauge hits the 2000 rpm mark it will go like a maniac, almost as quick as the TDI.

Do you think someone could have replaced the turbo with a bigger one??

No, it is an all original mill, except for the intercooler. No air leaks on intake side either. I think it is a tuning issue. Nothing that pump tweaking would not cure.
Just wondering how to tune this one...
I don't think the longer tubing and cooler is the problem. It just feels breathless below 1800 rpm. No big clouds of black smoke either. The motor feels very good, running smoothly at all times, just like any diesel should.

hmmm doesn't sound right.. stock turbo is the K03 which should spool early..  horse power usually doesn't kick on until 2k rpm anyways.

maybe the lda enrichment is set stronger, but the max fuel screw is set to stock, or lower??? try increasing it (make note of your changes... try 1/4 turns each time and WATCH the smoke... dont burn out your motor)

has this motor had the TDI crank fix installed???

Funny thing, as everything seem OK with the motor. I would guess that previous owners haven't thought about it.

"has this motor had the TDI crank fix installed???" What would this be?

Could be that you need the spaceship cone from a 1.6TD rather than a stock 'almost parallel' cone of the 1.9

if the pump timing is not set correct could this make any difference?
the 1.6 looked faster because it was on a golf II that is lighter than golf III...could be that

That would be machining the crank to accept a TDI sprocket, I believe. Mainly intended to prevent the crankshaft nose from tearing apart at the keyway. The amount of power involved in a 1.9 is apparently sufficient to eventually cause the metal to fail at that point; a TDI sprocket has no keyway, instead holding position through the D-shape of the crank hole.

Did I get that right, gurus?

Yes that is correct. The TDI pulley is D-shaped!!
I dont recall the stock power on my IDI..but I remember it was completely gutless...it could have been other problems with the car....but since then I have rebuilt the engine, turned up the boost and fuel...and its a nice ride now....milage stayed about the same!!! if not better gas milage cause I dont have to floor it all the time...1/4 throttle is more than enuf to zip around town!!!

Hmm.. this was new to me. Will check when changing timing belt. Wouldn't the valves hit at that point? Would the pump timing be late, then? No black smoke at any time, exept at full power / full throttle. All my 1.6 did smoke quite alot when heavy on the throttle and above 3000 rpm.
This 1.9 TD runs strong between 2000 and 3800 rpm, anything out of that range, and it does not pull as it should

sorry but the 75 that the golf III as are 75 HP and the golf II came with 60(eco),70 and 80HP engines.
so similar or higher HP to less wheight and the feeling is diferent...
