Jetta with no power
« on: February 26, 2007, 09:22:40 am »
Started having problems with my 91 Jetta a couple weeks ago when the weather got really cold.  It had been running great for over a month, then would barely start, smoke like crazy and had no power.  The temp had gotten down to -2F or so for the night.  Thought the fuel had gelled, put PS 911 in the tank and in a new filter.  Still have the same problem.  The motor has new rings and head gasket (less than 2k miles ago).  Timing is right where it should be.  Did I damage the pump?  Anyone have any ideas?  Thanks

Thanks for the suggestion.  Tried driving it last night, the outside temp was a little above freezing.  It's running like it's not getting enough fuel.  I'll try the purge and let you know.

Just found a place that has LM Diesel Purge and will hopefully try to get it done tonight or tomorrow.  I'll be sure to check the fuel lines beforehand.

Ran the bottle of LM DP through yesterday.  Seemed to be running a lot better.  Idle returned to normal, most of the smoke had stopped.  Hooked the fuel delivery back up and took it for a ride.  Ran better but still had little power and started smoking again.  Could the fuel be bad?  It's down to 1/4 tank, has some kerosene and diesel 911 mixed in.  I'll try getting some fresh fuel and run it through the pump to see if it runs better.  Any other ideas?  I'd appreciate any input.  Thanks

The blocked filter would make sense.  Of course, it's going to be really cold here the next few days so I won't be working on any cars for a while.  Do you know if there is an inspection plate that allows access to the fuel lines or do I have to drop the tank to get at them?  Might be time to purge the whole system.  Thanks for your input so far, you got me thinking in the right direction.
