Wacky timing issues.

So I replaced the TB on a friends 82 caddy tonight, according to bently the timing should be set to 1mm (max) (.393) I also live at high altitude, the car has been somewhat sluggish ever since he bought it (I've driven other old IDIs up here for comparisson).

I figured the timing was retarded and the TB would help it out with the timing reset, nope! It hardly started and revved up real slow with the timing set at .39"

I didn't check the timing before I removed the belt, but after the belt it was at .52"   maybe it was the new belt, maybe it was that advanced before, who knows. So since it wouldn't run well at .39 we bumped it back up to .50" and it started decently and ran smooth, no excessive noise, power was the same as before the belt swap.

To throw another variable in the mix, the caddy has an aftermarket turbo system, here is a pic of an attachment on the pump,

I doubt this boost enrichment device affects timing in any way, but...

So, is the pump dying? The car has never started well when cold, he parks it in a heated shop or it would never start here, it supposedly has only 36K miles on it, I will be doing a compression test soon to get some idea of whether or not thats true.

Oh yea, the old TB was SLACK when I took the cover off, and I broke it with my bare hands like it was damp cardboard

Do you know if it has stock injectors in it?  High pop injectors will modify the actual injection pulse and require a different setting at the pump.

hey I just installed some 160 bar GTD injectors that smog did up for me...  I'm currently running about 1.05mm timing.  does the extra 5 bar require me to advance anymore??? the car does feel different!  Before with the regular injectors (probably worn out nicely) and the 1.06mm advance they seemed to run/start amazing!  now my starts are noticeably rougher...

Yes I would think that you should advance the timing more

The cold start advance was the issue, yea, the knob was pulled out   , I spaced it as the only other IDI I've worked on had the automatic timing advance based on coolant temp. Starts and runs well now...

Thats where one of those piezo inductive timing lights would sure be handy.
