i just stumbled on a great caddy for sale. solid basis for a project... its in pieces but i think i'll try to put it back together quick and drive it through winter while i build up the bunny....





he's a porsche/bimmer guy and he's clearing out all his VW crap so it comes with some spare bits as well

its mine. drove to newmarket and bought it last night  

man you guys should have seen his '72 911S that is parked right next to the caddy. phew... i spent the first 20-30 minutes there just shootin the *** about the porsche! ...he also has an '88 325 iX <drumroll> wagon. mint. black leather... did i say mint? sent across the water from germany....

i've reconsidered my original ambitious goal of getting the caddy ready for this winter. i'm going to look at a soft '81 rabbit ('GTI conversion') tonight and as long as it runs ok i'm going to torture that until the spring.

i'm still undecided about the fate of the caddy's powerplant. i'd really like to put in a 16v... manifold/turbo from a TD and get megasquirt running it. if you guys can talk me into a diesel setup that can make as much power as cheap... i'd like to hear it!  :lol:

i went to fill up last night... diesel 86.6, gas 81.6  :x

...so i drove to the truckstop in milton, 81.2 for diesel out there.

No need for discussions, Lanny. You know everyone's opinion here. It'd be like trying to get blood from a stone, convincing gassers of diesel virtues.  Don't forget, in the few days it ran before it's new engine succumbing to shoddy machine work,  my jetta shocked more than a few local hardcore gassers around here as it rushed past 6500 rpm at 35 psi...  and it doesn't require high test gas.

not really looking for a discussion on the topic gas vs. diesel... i know what will come of that in here.

i know your engine will kick some ass doc, but i can grab a tested 16v for around $600, throw it in and have a blast. there are as many arguments for diesel though too so it won't be an easy decision. i have a lot of work ahead of me before i have to choose a powerplant anyway.  :?  :lol:

 i thought a TD manifold would bolt up! i will need to check into that i guess  :lol: i know 16vs are common... but i've got burned in the persuit of uniqueness before ($$$) i'd kind of like to just throw in whatever will be cheap, fast, and easy.  :lol:

I've heard that it's not too hard- Bildon motorsports sells 5x100 conversion hubs for A1's, not sure about brakes and such though.  For the rears, all you need is A3 VR6 or Corrado rear brakes, rotors, calipers, bearings, stub axles, and 16v e-brake cables.  I have yet to see any real procedures for the fronts though, other than the conversion hubs.  I'd like to know, as I have a nice set of 5x100 wheels off of my Beretta that would look sweet on my Scirocco..

finally got the truck home tonight. sits outside covered as it begins to rain. gonna take some time over the winter getting it ready for next summer... maybe?  :lol:

he's put a 1.8L 8v from a GTI in it for the time being so he can drive it for winter... but after driving in a 1.6L TD caddy and bombing around in my 1.6L TD rabbit, i hope he's started to sway toward diesel power. :twisted:
