Non-turbo Eco-diesel: Turbo ready?

I'm interested in a 1991 Jetta NA Diesel that has the ME (Mexico) code diesel engine and he claims it's an eco-diesel. I thought all ecos were turboed. Is this eco turbo ready? I.E. have the same head, pistons, oil squirters and the turboed version?

I found that the 1V is eco, ME is normally aspirated. I don't suppose these still used the better heads and oil squirters?

Without looking im my Bentley, I'd say the CR (compression ratio) would be too high, as when you go from NA (normally aspirated) to forced induction using either a turbo or a supercharger, such as a G-Lader, you need to reduce the compression ratio.

As far as i know, true eco diesels all came with turbochargers. That's what made them "eco", getting extra air to run cleaner. If it really is an eco, then someone must have removed the turbo at some point. Should be good to go for re-turbo-ing.

Sure, on a gas engine, you'd need to do take measures such as reducing CR when going to forced induction in order to keep detonation at bay. But on a diesel (including VW's diesel models) they don't, and it is not necessary, because detonation isn't possible on a diesel motor.

According to ETKA: the '91-'92 Jetta "eco diesel", Engine code "1V", indeed has a small turbocharger, although no boost enrichment device. I'm fairly certain that piston-cooling oil jets are found in all VW turbo diesel motors including the "1V".

If it's ME then it's not ECOdiesel. Also, prior post is correct, the ECOd did have a smaller turbo but no boost enrichment on the inj. pump. The confusion comes because VW at this time was producing the 1.6D (me), the 1.6TD (mf) and the 1.6 ECOd (1v).
There's often a lot of confusion about this, people list ECOd's as TD's, which technically is accurate, but not generally what we want when were really looking for the 1.6 MF engine.
It's also often something that you cant get to the bottom of until you see it for yourself. At least that's been my experience!

I don't think I've never found evidence of a diesel '91-'92 Jetta sold in the US that didn't have the "1V" eco diesel engine.
I also haven't heard of an A2 diesel Golf that didn't have the naturally aspirated 1.6l diesel (ME), or an '85-'86 diesel Jetta that wasn't an "MF".
I'm pretty sure this could be confirmed in ETKA, but I haven't done so... just going off of memory here. Please correct me if I am wrong.
Anyway, in summary, all you need to know to figure out which A2 diesel it is, if sold in the US market, is the year and the model.

my 91 jetta is NA... Unless someone before me took the turbo off, which I doubt. It does have the ATM comp pump on it.

my 91 jetta is an eco diesel....
my friends 91 jetta is n/a diesel
there was only 750 eco diesels ever made in the us for 1991
and only 47 eco diesels made in 1992
if anyone on hear has an eco diesel there is an eco diesel specific web site with a bunch of background info on them.
mines still running great with 261,000 miles on it... original everything, clutch and all.
