B3 Passat RPM's at speed?
« on: November 12, 2006, 03:45:27 pm »
I've never been impressed with the mileage or the cabin noise in my B3 Passat, and I'm beginning to wonder if I've got a different 5th gear in it.

What RPM does someone else's Passat run at speed?  Mine's 3,000 rpm at 110 km/hr (68mph) in 5th.

I just bought a CHE tranny :)

Final          1st            2nd           3rd            4th            5th
3.67          3.45   1.94   1.29   0.97   0.71

the prev owner got the taller 5th gear installed!  Eagerly awaiting its install!!!  3k rpm gives 78.0mph or 125.53 kph.  increase the tire size, and i can squeeze another 5 kph for 3k rpm :)

I havent checked.. but i swear i have the AVX in my car now... it goes like this

Final          1st            2nd           3rd           4th            5th
4.25   3.45   1.94   1.29   0.91   0.75

it barely made 64 mph at 3k rpm and so had to be driven at around 3500 do keep up with traffic...  that thing was a pig!  I'm almost sure that it was because it came with cruise control though...  All I will do is mod the car a bit and then fix up the cruise and it will work great!

I just checked my dads b4 passat I think (95) AAZ and at approx 3000 rpm it runs at approx 111-113km/hr.So yours seems normal to me.I wonder if the b4 passat TDI (96) has different trans gearing thats better suited for cruising??

Thanks for the replies.

I'm beginning to wonder if the cabin noise is from something else then, maybe rumbly wheel bearings.

My 92 jetta TD is at about 2600 at 100kmh. 3000 is 110. I'm also experiencing a grinding noise, I'm pretty sure it's my bearings. I'm still on my first tank, and I have over half left and have gone 520 kms  :)

One problem with our cars is seperating the normal noise fom the bad.  I recently noticed how much quiter my car was after I disconected the Vbelt from the now siezed PS pump.  It was letting me know it was going for a long time, but the noises blended into the other rattles.

Your wheel bearings will get louder, but it might take a while.  It took probably 5,000 km for mine to get from the stage of 'yup that new sound goes away when in RH turns...probably bearings' To the stage of not being able to get the stereo loud enough to drown the noise and other drivers looking over at me on the highway.   And yet the bearing only had a few minor pits in one race.

That nice. Which trans are you running? I plan on putting an AON trans in mine.

nice choice on the AON, its kinda like the CHD...

Final          1st           2nd           3rd           4th            5th
3.67   3.45   1.94   1.37   1.03   0.75

74.3mph @ 3000rpm with a wheel circle of 71.5"

there must be a way to get insane gears for these tranny's though... like a 0.65 5th lol... 85.2mph @ 3000rpm!!!  i'm sure the head gasket would really want to blow though!
