Getting the most out of my N/A Diesel
« on: November 10, 2006, 12:26:02 am »
I have an 86 VW jetta 1.6L N/A diesel.  i was wondering what would be the cheapest and easyest way to increase fuel economy and performance on this engine without doing any serious mods that cost big bucks (like porting and polishing the head or boreing out the cylinders, etc...)  i think i read somewhere that installing a turbo diesel pump with an LDA would be a good idea and gasser exhaust manifold?  i want to start makeing a list of parts that i can get from junk yards or part shops.  i think i also read on a post somewhere that NOS can be fitted up to the turbo diesel pump on the LDA port so it can suck in NOS?  has anyone ever tryed running pure oxygen into this port?   this sounds like an awesome idea and id like to know more about fitting a turbo diesel pump to my N/A,  if anyone has info it would be really appreciated.

for more horsepower:
put a turbo on your engine, put a lda on your pump.
much more power, put a BIG pump on your engine (bigger plunger) and a BIG turbo  :P  something like the GT2559v  :D

Without putting money in your car, you can do the governermod and give a bit more diesel, check out the FAQ zone

for better economy, drive slower    i dont think there are realy mod's to increase economy, there are mods, if they work,  dont think they are worht becouse you also spend money for this mods... as far as i know

Fuel economy can be approached from a few angles. Go for LRR (low rolling resistance) tires and overinflate them ~10psi, or just do the same to your stock tires, A properly designed undertray with a rear diffuser would help, as would synthetic oil/lube. If, through some miracle, you managed to cut the drag coefficient in half (in order to get there the car would need to go through changes that most people wouldn't like the look of) and ran 14" wheels with LRR RE92's, you'd probably get ~80-100mpg cruising at 45-50mph.

Engine mods are another story, I haven't seen any that are done and tested but I've heard that there's a lot to be gained from turbocharging/running excessively lean and minimizing heat losses in the engine. Here's an article on the Elsbett engine in a Mercedes returning over 70mpg, and it's probably not a coincidence that it's oil cooled. One problem is this is a largely undocumented area as opposed to aerodynamic and tire changes, which have made documented improvements in gasoline powered vehicle efficiency, and would probably result in an even bigger improvement on a diesel. So yeah... YMMV.

One last thing, drive slow and shift low. The best I've gotten with a beat to hell bunny was ~55mpg@45mph, so one of these with nice tires in good condition should be able to pull ~65mpg@45mph.

so putting a turbo diesel pump with an LDA wont give me any benefits at all on my N/A?  does anyone know about running NOS into the LDA?  can this be done on a stock N/A diesel without blowing it to pieces?

If you hooked the LDA up to the exhaust manifold maybe you'd get something happening ;)
Waiting for a bigger better diesel to come along.

Without the turbo to go with it you won't gain anything.

I don't think NOS is injected into the LDA, from my understanding the LDA is a boost sensitve device used to adjust the fuel.

there was a few guys on here talking about modding the lda to receive the NOS pressure (just run an extra line there)  and that would increase the fueling.  would be a neat, but expensive setup :)

Dr Diesel has posted about this. If you run NOS on a WOT switch and have the NOS also pressurize the LDA as it gets injected into the intake mani then you will have more Oxygen from the NOS and more fuel from the LDA which gets depressed by the NOS pressure and you'll have more power. Really slick Idea actually. A kit like this would work well I'm sure.

FYI, running that 35 HP jet in that NOS kit will give you about 6 minutes of NOS before the bottle (10 pounds) runs out, it costs about $40 to fill up the bottle, fwiw.
