i bought this diesel rabbit and i got it running good, it does need injectors, but when you go highway speeds like 50+ it will like to run away. but it doesn't seems like it should be doing that, as it has no more blow by when you open the oil cap than my td )which is in great shape) or my dads td which is rebuilt, and my rabbit only has 150k on it. is there anything else that could make it kinda run away, i only got it to do it once and it was pretty easy to stop and wasn't violent at all ( it's an automatic) could it be because of the leaky injectors in cylinders 1, 2, 3, and 4? thanks yos

put a camshield in it and get the crankcase breather routed to the atmosphere,that will buy you some time till a rebuild

sounds like its running away from talking to a previous owner, i'm taking it to work tomorrow so we'll see how she does...

Wow those glow plugs are bad. I'll try and get you those injectors ASAP.

Have you done a compression check on it?

don't worry about it, it ran away on the highway on my way to work. i'll have to type up a detailed description of what happened, but let me tell you, that motor blew the *** up. so i guess my plans for getting my jetta painted are toasted until i stick another motor in it, not gonna bother with a rebuild, 1.6d's are cheap in whole than if i rebuilt it. it's locked up and everything too. so if ur car seems like its running away, it's running away, and you should do as hillfolk said. so does anyone have a spare 1.6d laying around? maybe one with a 5 speed attached to the back

ok so i got the tags and everything for this car on tuesday or wednesday, and then any run i made accept for back and forth to work i would take this car for, i would take it on long trips and stuff all this week. so thursday night i decided it was time to put it to the real test and take it to work, which is about 20 miles. all went well and i loved having the automatic while i drove to work as i like eating poptarts on my way to work. and i got on the highway, it got right up to speed and merged in nicely and had no trouble keeping up (like i said before this thing ran very well had good power for a n/a diesel and started first try everytime no ifs ands or buttholes) anwyays cruised down the highway at 55-60mph the whole way (well most of it haha) at one point it started to run but i hit the brake a little and it stopped right away (fore shadowing {skin}). then a couple miles down the road a mile away from my exit (south queen street) it started again, this time it was alot stronger than last time, i looked in the rear view and saw all sorts of white smoke shooting out, but it was still very controllable so i hit the brake some and slowed down but i forgot i had the transmission in E so when i left off the gas pedal it went into neutral automatically and started revving like crazy because the "E" is for economy and disengages the motor when ever you let off the pedal, i immediately pulled over and popped the hood and tried to think what i need to do, i popped the hood and frantically hopped out while my engine screamed like crazy, i was so nervous/excited/scared i didn't know what to do i tried flicking the shut off lever on the front of the injector pump obviously with no result, and boy was it scary to reach in that engine bay while that motor was roaring away, i went back in the car and thought about putting it in drive, but i knew that would just hurt the tranny, but i couldn't think of what to do i felt so hopeless i got back out and stared at the engine as my investment self destructed and basically became worthless to me, it also meant that my jetta wasn't going to get started on being painted with in the next week like i had hoped for so long, (which was the reason i bought the rabbit) just so upsetting, then BAM my guardian angel slapped me in the face and i jumped in the engine bay and put my hand over the end of the intake snorkel and it slowly putted to a halt. just then i looked up and all that surrounded me was white gray yellowish smoke, and it smelled like ass and death. all 4 lanes on the highway had slowed to nearly a complete stop as there was no way to see through the smoke which had forced its way out of my exhaust, seriously i can't explain how much smoke there was, i'm surprised no one wrecked there cars because of it, like it was the entire width of 83 then in and above the trees, and probably a little less than a foot ball fields lenghth of 83 covered by it, so then i stood there exhilarated just stairing at my car taking in what all had happened as some passerby pulled over to offer help (some fire fighter guy you know how they get a woodie off of that type of ***) so yeah. it was wow. most exciting thing that has happened to me in a long time, i think everyone that experiencies a run away should get a badge or something "i survived a vw diesel run away"

Good call on killing it's air supply. Is the engine shot now or still rebuildable?

You can stall it too. That's what the guy did to the Jetta I bought. Started running away on the highway so he kept it in 5th and braked hard. Have to have a good clutch to do this though

well she definetly blew i tore the head off, i'll have pics later, i stopped the engine by cutting the air, but the cylidners are full of oil, the head and valve train looks sexy as does the, right now i have rags soaking up all the oil, so we'll see what the bore looks like and how the pistons look, i know one had a valve imprint. so far it looks rebuildable though.

Hi Guys,

what is meant by runaway? as in an engine running on its engine oil as fuel? so hence is runs away and can't be stalled by the key?

Its well scary when things like that happen, Once I had a beat up MK2 scirocco gasser/petrol and I pulled into a petrol station to get fuel, turned the engine off and looked down to switch the stereo off but noticed twists of smoke starting to appear through the vents. popped the bonnet/hood jumped out and lifted the lid only to be greeted by flames, i was like Holy Cow.. Sh1T what the £uck do i do?, how can i put em out, frantically looking round I saw on the shop front a red bucket with "FIRE". I ran over and gradded it with 1 hand and pulled off the lid with my other hand. it was full of gravel/sand like motar mix/cement for houses. I had no choice but to lob it in. Yep the flames went out and only a few pipes were burnt but it never ran or sounded the same again. it sounded like a bag of nails. I still remember the look on the face of the gas/petrol attendent hiding behind the counter. I actually had vision of the garage going up in flames. I nearly soiled my boxers.

TrevO you have my heart felt, I can imagine how you felt at that point in time.

yep that's exactly what it's like so hopeless and i mean i would have nawed the breather hose off of the valve cover with my teeth if it would have stopped the run away, so desperate haha.

ok so heres the theory we have so far, the pistons are in there fairly tight, so the old lady that had it must have over heated it, then someone replaced the head with one of those spanish heads (awesome i have a new head hehe) and called it good, but since the new head has the new valves and stuff, it made the compression better, but at the same time cause more blow by by the rings which had cracked when it over heated, this resulted in my run away. so remember guys, half assed jobs are not ok haha. also, had diesel jim run over and do some measurements, he said the cylinders look good, and the rods didn't bend or anything, even though there are valve slap marks on the head, so piston protusion and cylind diameter is all looking sexy time for a rebuild and this thing will be a champion. heres the pictures~
