1.6TD intercooler piping diameter
« on: October 02, 2006, 11:02:29 am »
Can anyone tell me what the internal diameter is of the compressor outlet on the stock 1.6TD Garrett turbo and the inlet "elbow" on the intake?  Possibly 1.75"?

I'm not in a position where I can take my car apart to measure at the moment...just thought someone would have a spare turbo or intake to measure for me.

I've got a Starion intercooler on the way and I want to round up my intercooler piping and silicone pieces.  Am I correct in assuming that the IC piping should be around the same size as the turbo outlet and intake elbow I.D?   I don't need big flashy chrome piping...I'm aiming for a good flowing system.  What diameters have others used?

I'm pretty sure the ID of the VW T3 comp. outlet is close to 1.5". I used a short section of rubber hose between the comp. outlet flange and the bigger rubber hose that was used in the rest of the air-air system, which is 2.25" Al. tube. A bigger charge pipe system might mean the boost threshold is a little longer, but max flow will be better.

Anyone else have any input as to what diameter the IC piping should be on the 1.6 TD?  Don't want to go bigger than I have to and decrease velocity / increase lag...

So 2.5 would be a little overkill? im just starting to look at an intercooler install on my 1.9 idi. i will be using a audi 5000 intercooler i think....i also have a srt-4 front mount....but i was gonna use that on my g60....maybe ill use it on the diesel!!!!

2.5 would be nice, I had a hard time finding 2.5 aluminum... and the 2 1/4 was $18USD per U bend, had to draw the line somewhere. If you plan on running high boost I'd say go for it.

Should all pipework beyond intercooler be lagged to stop engine compartment reheating?
