Hello again.
I just got home finally after checking out the cars.
My dad and I went to meet the seller at a gas station in Greensboro, I put 2 dollars of D2 in my tiny gas can and hopped on the freeway.
We followed him to a small house in the middle of Alamance County, one of the cars [a mkII golf] was near the driveway while 2 rabbits were behind a shed.
We went to the rabbits first to take a look, the first one turns out to be the parts car ['81 rabbit LS], unknown condition of engine or anything else for that matter, non-turbo, basic rabbit.
The second one looks like a '78 or '79 Rabbit C. Owner says that a neighbor got the engine to run about a year ago. Again, non-turbo, simpleton car. More surface rust than the LS. Bunch of parts lying inside, interior is so-so. Grass has grown up all around and between the cars.
The MKII Golf seems to be an '85 [11/85 date sticker] with 243,000 miles and appears in much better cosmetic condition.
This is the car we decide to attempt to start. After looking thru the engine compartment briefly, I hook up the battery that is already there.
I get the key, get inside and turn it to ON.
Immediately a few lights blink on and the silly buzzer chimes on. GP light did not flash. Turn key for start (about 1 second.) weak start, did not go.
I brought spare battery and jumper cables. Also, I check fuel priming so I pull line off of fuel filter and pour diesel into it.
Then I unscrew the banjo bolt at top of IP and pour diesel in until it reaches the top and reinstall the bolt. I put the fuel line inside my fuel can for now.
With an extra battery jumped on, i go back to turn the key to ON again and GP light blinks for about 1 second. I wait 5 more seconds and turn to start.
Engine starts up quickly, but pretty rough. I am pumping the pedal like a gasser, but it dies.
I retry filling IP and hoses and reconnect back to filter. I go back to ignition switch and the engine starts up nice and quick this time.
It is idling okay so i hop out and walk around to get a good look at exhaust and listen to the engine running. I get back in and give the engine a few rpms and watch the smoke out back.
It looked sort of blueish-white, maybe more blueish. but definitely not black 'n sooty like normal diesel.
She starts running rough again so I assume it was air bubbles in the line and I turned the engine off.
We stand around and talk some more, as it is getting darker outside, I try to look under the car to search for rust, but the floorpans look pretty clean, actually, most of the car does, except for a small dent in fender. Seats and interior look pretty decent, except for headliner which is torn and falling down.
She has the title for the Golf and can get in touch with the PO of the "C" because the license office said they didn't match up and would have to do the title again. The LS is for parts so no title for it.
The lady said she would like $800 for all 3 cars.
Being such a new person to diesels, I was pretty amazed that I got a diesel to start....and run. Especially one that has been sitting for over a year.
