i am looking at trying to do a diesel swap into a 1987 vw quantum synchro wagon. I was told that audi made a turbo diesel in a 1983 5000, that would bolt right up. I am new at the diesel thing and am looking for as much info on this topic. What all is involed, whats my best choice for an engine (i was also told of a naturally aspirated diesel that would work as well), where i may be able to find a motor, or if you know anyone who has ever done it.
Any info on this topic would be greatly appreciated, as I really dont know that much at all about it, but would really like to try it.
I'm not familiar with the syncro/quattro setup that VAG used on the Quantum and Audi 4000 (hint: anything between a Quantum and an Audi 4000 is interchangable. They're the same car.), and therefore, can't give any advice on hooking it up in such a swap.
However, everything else... the Quantum and Audi 4000 were both sold with factory diesels - both naturally aspirated and turbo.
Seeing as these vehicles are heavier than Golfs and Jettas, and have more drivetrain losses due to the longitudal transmission (and, if you hook it up, syncro), you'll want more power to push them around, and that calls for a turbodiesel.
You will need (to do this right) the engine, transmission, possibly driveshafts, instrument cluster, some wiring, and a diesel filler neck. A diesel fuel pickup may not be a bad idea either, but the gasser pickup may have a pre-pump, meaning it may actually work better than the diesel pickup.
Your best bet for a motor is likely a totalled vehicle, preferably one that has recieved a rear-end collision.
Another motor option that you might consider, although you'll want all of the rest of the drivetrain from the factory diesel, is a 1.9L turbodiesel out of a Candian-spec early Mk3 Golf or Jetta, or B3 or early B4 Passat, engine code AAZ.
so will the canadian 1.9 lt turbodiesel work w/ a syncro? (AAZ)
whats the most reliable turbodiesel i can put in the quattro wagon?
and any ideas where i may be able to find a motor and accessories?
i am trying to figure out if my idea for this project is worth it, and if i can make a solid reliable, and powerful enough car that i may go biodiesel with as well.
thank you very much for the info?

You mean Quantum Syncro? Or Quattro?
4 and 5 banger VW engine have different bolt patterns, the quantum has a 5 banger so there is no TDI engine sold on this continent that will work with it.
Both the Quantums and Quatros came with a 5 banger?
Quantum syncros were all 5 banger, quatros, I think were available with 4 or 5, but 5's are not that common?
oops- meant to say syncro......
