Author Topic: white smoke, engine missing, poor running. whats the cause? (Read 6077 times)

working on a family members caddy. the symptons are rough running, white smoke at idle and the engine misses untill its fully warmed up. after it warms up it still intermittenly misses and continues to smoke white. it smokes black under load, but white when at idle or low load. it also shakes alot at idle but had good motor mounts.

it has a good engine with 475lbs of compression average on each cyl. doesnt use oil or coolant. new glow plugs, new injectors, cam and pump are timed properly.

it runs better if the cold start lever is pulled out, but i dont think this is a long term solution, espically sence it isnt cold in south florida. the pump was rebuilt some years ago and had not been fooled around with.

theres no air bubbles in the fuel line, and it gets plenty of fuel. we tested the engine by running it from a galon bucket of diesel with no filter, and it ran the same way.

just for a test i drained the coolant and let the engine completely cool off. i then started it and ran it for 20 seconds. the white smoke did not disappear so i dont think its coolant.

sence everything else checks out good im thinking something is wrong with the pump. what do you guys think? i have 3 spares i can swap out to but theres no garantee those spares are any good.

White smoke is either retarded timing or poorly spraying injector(s).
I'd guess retarded timing.

the pump timing was about half a mm retarded. i dont know if thats because i initally timed it wrong, or timed it with the cold start engaged, or maybe something in the pump changed, but i re timed it to 1.00mm and it runs perfect.

i dont think this thing can burnout. it kind of spins the tyrees too slow to smoke um. i need to swap in that complete td motor i have laying around.

I can't even spin my tires... my timing is so far off though
cam retarded 1 tooth and IP at 1.3 or 1.5, I forget now. Plus I need a valve adjustment bad
