tdc flywheel markings, im confused.
« on: July 21, 2006, 08:16:40 pm »
theres 2 markings on my flywheel that are both close to tdc. 1 is a big square protrusion of cast iron. the second is a "v-grooved" notch a few inches to the right of the big square protrusion.

i dont know if this is a gas or diesel flywheel.

i times the pump to 1.0mm using the v-groove and the engine runs lind of junky. i have to advance the injection pump cold start to get it to run good.

i havent tried timing it to the square notch yet.

what do ya guys think?

The big "v" grooved notch is TDC, the "0" (kind of looks like a square) is 6 degrees before TDC for timing the gassers, so you have a gasser flywheel, the diesel ones only have the big "v" notch. But you can use the one you have just fine dont sweat it.

i tend to agree with you.

i just went out there and did a tdc check the ghetto way. i put a breaker bar on the crankshaft and turned the engine over untill i felt it get easy (at tdc or bdc) so i layed under the car and turned the crank left and right a bunch of times zeroing in on tdc. when i was satisfied i got out from under the car and looked at the flywheel. the v groove was exactly aligned with the bellhousing pointer.  it really must be tdc.

but my engine still misses... i checked pump timing, its at 1.00mm. i rechecked the cam, its zeroed in perfectly to the crank. compression is 450-475-480-470 cyl. seems good enough.

injectors? i did have the injectors tested 6 months ago and the diesel tech said they were OK and would get me by but he said i should think about rebuilding them sometime in the future. i guess i should pull em and rebuild em?

did ya convert to a 210 mm flywheel?
the timing marks dont work,ya gotta redo them if so
this will really jack ya i scratched my head for a few days on this one
i did a thread about this a while ago i can probably find it if ya need or search my threads
basically if ya did a 210 ya need to remark the tdc mark
ya need to make some sort of piston stop
im thinkin ya could hang a valve open to use as a stop
ive done this on other engines before and it works, dont get crazy with a breaker bar though
Throttle cables ftw
