greetings mates, im from NC, USA. i  am currently trying to get my dub up to par. i purchased a 1989 vw jetta diesel n/a and am currently looking for swap/rebuild information. questions what is the difference btwn a td and n/a of this year. i assume the combustion chambers are different and the head is also as i have seen a few posts of this. can one simply use a 1.6 n/a and install a td manifold downpipe, turbo and intake + tune to get a turbo diesel. i assume the answers to my questions are simply buy a 1.6td and be done with it. but the motor i have is a stout little motor and i am interested in learning the rebuild of a diesel as i have pretty much mastered rebuilding 4g63t from my eclipse dsm. if anyone has info i would appreciate it

i read the article it still doesnt help mch as i am wondering the main difference btwn the jetta diesel and jetta turbo diesel motors. do manifolds matchup are pistons and rods and block the same ect? if anyone has answers to these questions let me know.

installing a turbo manifold and plumbing isnt as hard as swapping a whole motor. that and its easier on the pocket

the worst part is i did search it :-/ oh well. i guess diesel na or n/a doesnt count b.c nothing was returned maybe ill search conversion. but now it is sounding like the dsm as it has squirters under the pistons above the girdle in the block. question for you these squirters on the dsm u can transplant them from a boosted motor to a n/a one. any possibility of that (just incase the search button brings back no articles as it did before)!

I believe you can drill the block for them, also there have been people who haved turbo'ed NA blocks and not had problems of course they didn't push over 12psi on the motor either.

You could IC it and then possibly get away with more boost but I would watch EGT's closely.

I have personly seen guys push 30psi + on NA blocks, as long as you watch the egt's you are good to go. If you drill out and install the oil squirters you have a turbo block.

ok so basically drill the block like the dsm for the oil squirters install them and i got a turbo block. ok guys thats a good route for me. question am i going to need a different head to boltup the manifold turbo and plumbing to and also another computer. moreover what about the fuel pump thing i have been hearing i need to replace/rebuild that but i have heard n/as are better or maybe i read that wrong!

let me know any info and point me to the info if its been posted on before

turbo pistions are a different alloy than he NA pistons, the head is a completly different  makeup to the NA head, sodium filled valves, oil squirters, and I believe the rods are different also.  

The TD motor is a very tough and quick motor when setup right,  you will never go back to NA after seeing the magic of a disconnected wastgate, injector pump mods, and free flowing exhaust.... and so on   :twisted:

If you want a nice high rever, find a mechanical(non hydraulic) TD head with the 1.6 bottom end and you will have alot more HP in the top end rev's.  ( info from Dr. D   )

Physically, both the head and block are the same (except for the oil squirter plumbing in the TD block). They just use different alloys for parts.

Heck, even 8V gassers are pretty close to 1.6 diesels as you can use the turbo exhaust manifold on an 8V and use gasser manifolds on 1.6 heads. These cars are like legos. There was even a guy who IIRC used a 1.5L diesel block, bored it to 1.7L and used it in a turbo gasser setup for his MK1.

ok this is sounding good like when i bought a a few honda civic hatches with d series. i have gutted and boosted a 89 and a 90 hatch before. did a minimi swap on one too. ok i think im pretty much set. so find myself a 1.6 non hydrolic head with manifold turbo downpipe and intake setup. nothing else special ie maf/mas like my ddsm has?

i am wondering alot now b.c i have check some of the rebuild kits out and on dubs a whole gasket set with piston rings ect is cheaper than a head set for my dsm. also where can i find some arp studs ect for my setup?

i need to know all where to source the manifold as junk yards in the us are hard to find a turbo diesel mk2 motor. also transmissions are they interchangeable and which will handle the ammount of power the best?
