1.6TD Boost Performance
« on: May 29, 2006, 04:05:34 pm »
Hi All,

I have been trying to help a friend tune up the performance on his '91 1.6TD.  The problem we are having is a lack of boost. This is a rebuilt engine with 5000KM on it.  A pyro has not been installed yet, however, a boost gauage and a boost control circuit with a hobs switch has been installed.  We are able to get 5-6 psi boost at around 2500RPM, and 10 psi at 4500 RPM - factory performance.  When we turn the fueling up - boost pin and max fuel screw, we get a lot more smoke..but boost response is marginally better. Max pressure is still around 10 psi.  We tested the boost of another car in town, and he has the same boost response of this one.  However, we did not try bypassing the actuator, as we did with this one.  We have tested the boost with the actuator hose removed..and still no improvement.  The turbo got a fresh set of bearings and the waste gate was cleaned prior to installation in the car. It has a decent whistle from the pipe.
What are we doing wrong?

you should look around more on the site but there is a blow off valve on the side of your intake closest to your air cleaner hose to the turbo. People usually plug it with a broom stick. the valve is a safety valve used in case of a wastegate failure and it pops around 12 psi. if you block it you will be able to use your boost controller to control however much you want. keep the boost under 35 psi especially if there is no intercooler.around 20 is pretty nice for a daily driver.
