I just got a lead on a VW Gasser for cheap.
What's involved in converting it over to diesel ??
what year/model?
the early cars should be pretty straight forward. the newer stuff would be far more complex.
it all depends on what motor you swap in, like malone went from a 2.0 mk3 to a 1.6 mk2 engine. the mk2 engine was mechanical so it made it very simple.

82 Caddy w/1.8 Gas to Diesel.
I think your best bet is to get the engine that veeman is selling it is a 1.5 with is what would have came in a 82(right?).And he is in Ohio to.I am not sure if he still has it but you can PM him and find out.
http://vwdiesel.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=3657.As for how hard it would be to swap over.Well that all comes down to how much work you want to do.Meaning you do you want a clean swap or are you going to just slap it together and make it look like a moron did it.As for parts wise on what you need you should do a search on here for it.The only think you might run into is if you use a 1.6 that is 86 or newer because it has a cold start handle and the pre 85's do not have cold start at all meaning no cut out in the dash for it.I hope this helps and if i am wrong on any of this let me know guys.

I actually bought that same engine off him about (10) days ago or so.
I bought it for my 81 Rabbit thinking my had worn pistons. Luckily, that turned out not to be the case, so I have this extra diesel engine sitting here.
That's why I'm pondering this Caddy project now. :?
should be simple. get that CIS fuel pump out of the back there and run some line to fill the gap. you'll need to get a 12v signal to the stop solenoid on the injection pump powered from the ignition switch. glow plug relay/wiring/fusable link. injection advance knob/line. diesel fuel filter... probably a few things i'm missing but should be a straight forward swap especially if the engine going in already has mkI engine mounts.
Like BlackTieTD said it should be a simple swap.As for the fuel filter i swaped in this Golden Rod filter form tractor supply
http://www.mytscstore.com/detail.asp?pcID=3&paID=1022&sonID=748&productID=58.To me it was chaper then a new fuel filter which was $45 at any parts store here and it had to be ordered. So i got the this filter which is $25 and the fittings to take it form 1 inch to 3/8 inch then i got some hose brads and it works just fine. The best part was that in the end it was under $40 to swap it in and the replacment filters for it are only $6.I still need to come with a braket for it and maybe a cover but i will deal with that later on.As for the power for the stop solenoid i have no idea where you should or could run a power wire form.Good luck on this and i hope it turns out grate.
