Welcome to the club. I suggest taking the time to read this forum more thoroughly to learn more about IDI / TD performance. There's plenty of juicy information here!

Definitely get an intercooler. What type of turbo do you have? i.e. T2, K03, K14? If you have a really small turbo like the K03 then upgrading to a K24 or T3 from a MK2 1.6TD (engine code CY, MF, and maybe another) will be more worthwhile. Get a 10mm or 11mm plunger, GTD nozzles, and do a governor mod. There are small details like pump timing advance etc. that you will find in this forum. Your car will be much quicker then.

Here's the thread for you to start reading (cheap mods):

That reminds me; did you get a crank fix? There's quite a few threads discussing the crank sprocket issue on AAZs.. it's necessary preventative maintenance. Other than that AAZs don't seem easy to break - they can last a long time with care.

the crank is at the bottom of the engine. it is the thick metal shaft that transfers the power from the pistons to the transmission. the pulley on the belt side of the crank is often updated and the crank modified on AAZ motors as preventative maintenance. the TDIs don't have this problem.

If you still have dificulties to understand, here is a pic of a crankshaft or simply crank:

On this board, when people say GTD nozzles, they mean tha 1.6TD RA/SB nozzles. They don't have these engines neither the actual GTD versions (just "regular" TD's) on North America, so they call them GTD nozzles.
I think that's it.  :)

My mistake, I assumed that you wanted your car to become "GTD." I did not know MK3 GTDs were made . Also, MK2 GTDs have intercoolers from the factory.. yet your MK3 does not have one?

The additional fuel requires additional boost & therefore intercooling would seem wise.

You could have GTD injectors.. I wonder if there's a part # for it?

Well, that's not entirely true, malone. In fact, mine is a GTD, yet it doesn't have an IC.  :)
I'm aware the GTD's were only sold in Europe, thus, a little confusion of yours. GTD is only the version of the car, as it's commercially available. There are GL TD's, CL TD's, and maybe others. So, the GTD is just the TD in a GTI outfit.
JR and RA/SB (the latter with IC) engines for 1.6TD's, among them, some versions are named as GTD's for having things like alloy wheels and other equipment features similar to the GTI.
Then there is the 1.6TD Katalysator or Eco as you know it in NA. That's has its 1V engine only and relatively little equipment. Not GTD, of course. I realize this is a comon version overthere, but not here in Europe.

As for Mk3's, there's only one 1.9TD: the AAZ. Some are named as GTD's for the same reasons as the Mk2's, and the other's, simply TD's. But the engine is all the same and no IC on Mk3's IDI.

IC = intercooler, for envy
