I just bought a 91 Eco Diesel TD 1.6 to be swapped into my 81 Caddy. Before i swap it in I was wondering what I should do to it. It has 150k Is a full rebuilt necasary? What can I check to tell what should be done? Will a timming belt water pump and new gaskets and seals be sufficent or will it be to worn. The turbo has no shaft play but has oil in the housing. Please help!
the oil could just be from the crank case vent.
The oil in the housing is from the crankcase, probably due to blowby.
If it's not in bad shape, you can get away with honing and reringing it.Throw a 1.9L head gasket on while the head is off.Rebuild the head, and do some minor porting.Drill the manifold for an EGT probe while the head is off,it easier, even if you just throw a plug in it for now.
Use a 1.9L windage tray oil pan gasket too,it's worth a few HP and some fuel mileage.
What year and make 1.9 head gasket? US or Canadian. Just curious why use a 1.9 head gasket?
The 1.9L (93-97) AAZ motor used a steel shim metal head gasket.Super strong, and rarely fails. Why use the stock 1.6L gasket which could fail ?
Wyldman,
Can you use the same head gasket on a 81 NA with the 12mm head.

Moved to troubleshooting section. not power enhancement related!
Check the intermediate shaft bearings while it is out of the car.
Andrew
How does one check the I-shaft bearings? i.e. how can I tell if they're bad or not?
I'm just about to start digging in to my engine and I'd like to check them.
