Easiest way to put 1.6td head back on?
«

The block is in the car an has head studs installed. Is it possible to put the head on with the manifold and turbo already on the head or should I put the head on and then bolt up the turbo, etc..
The manifold bolts were a pain in the ass to get off is why I'd like to try it with everything already mounted.
Also, is there no gasket between the turbo and manifold?
Thanks everyone

Depends on the turbo, but yes you can put it on with everything there if it is one of the stock turbos that I have tried. No gasket from factory.

Ok thanks. It's a k14 from an ecodiesel so it sounds like I should be fine with it all mounted up.

U will probably have to put the studs in after the head is on.

Hmmm two different opinions now. Regardless of which way I do it, I'm not putting the exhaust and turbo on after the head is on. The bolts are too hard to get to

I remove/replace with turbo, intake & exhaust intact. I removed the studs, placed the head and gasket on the block, then rethreaded the studs.

You can make head locating pins by cutting the heads and part of the shanks off a couple of old head bolts, then hacksaw a 1/16" deep slot into the protruding remnant of the shank. Loosely threaded into the block until 1/4"-1/2" protrudes above the deck surface, they can accurately locate & hold the head & gasket in place as you place it on the block & screw in the first 8 studs. A flat screwdriver & a magnet will fish them out of the block, allowing you to insert the final 2 studs.

you work on the intake/exhaust when you pull head, easy to get too. it can be a real jungle gym to get to all ex/int while head is on the car. you need a tool for exhaust manifold spring clamps, among other tools needed to complete job.

Been awhile, 2 years since the last one, but with the arp studs I think I put the front corners in and dropped the head on. I made the "dowels" our of the old head bolts, but I know I haven't used them since I got the arp studs.
