Cam Seal R&R..."No Special Tools" Required

Bentley gives a procedure to R&R the camshaft seal without "special" tools which requires loosening of the cam bearing caps.

Would this make it possible to easily just slip the old off and slip a new one on?

Are there any special concerns about loosening the caps?

It is really pretty simple if you undo the cap. The seal is a pretty simple device really.

Not that I ever noticed, remove cap, replace seal, replace cap.  Beware inaccurate torque wrench, I snapped a stud once.
I just tighten that one by hand now.

Yeah, that's in a different section in Bentley.

I've got the timing tools...............

Used them once to just check the timing......0.90 mm, on the money !!

Well then you are set to replace that cam seal.

I didn't use anything special when I  replaced mine.

you just have to loosen and wiggle off the 1 cap. I use either silicone, or permatex (aviation), on outer portion of seal, try not to get sealant on inner portion of seal-towards inside engine, grease seal I find works best, wipe off extra, but a generous amount on lips, permatex on outer portion of cap, just some.
I guess you end up having to loosen timing sheet metal.(5mm allen).

you need some kind of tube on inner of seal, where They run on shaft, I find grease, or a grease w/ some oil mixed in work, put some lube on shaft too and wipe of extra on inner of seal/shaft.
grease -the seal. or at least lube.
