Can with Crespo lifters. More money though.
The mask and the shot(s) are actually an IQ test. If you are wearing or circulating, you just failed the test. I can't feel sorry for you.

I'd rather just have the right valve.

The boss at the machine shop is in a state of disbelief over the situation.

Or at least he's affecting one. I have it on good authority that stuff goes wrong all the time when building engines.

Well now I'm stuck.

UPS dropped off the valve, i took it to the machinist, he measured it and it came up short. literally.

my OE exhaust valves measure 96.8756mm overall length, the new AE valve measures 95.0468mm.

Package has AE logo all over it, AE part number V91334, and VW part number 074-109-611.

VW part no 074... is correct. However, correct length for Exhaust 8mm, pre 1985ish is 95.5mm.
Inlet valve is 95.6mm.
Engine 1Z has 96.85mm for  both inlet and exhaust. Thus you have wrong valves, and they have sent 'wronger' :o. Calipers needed to read 3.76"

calipers are only accurate to .005"

When he sets it up he will have to put a thicker shim in it and that should be all. I don't see the issue, what am I missing?

I'm a n00b, but, do hydro heads have shims too?
I think they do, I am a mechanical only guy. Never had a hydro all the way down, but it would seem they could not just put the valve in without setting it up initially. The lifter would account for wear, but I would think that the varying valve lengths would have to be dealt with in some way. That maybe a bit much what you have but still there should be something.

No shims whatsoever on hydraulic engines. The magical lifters take care of everything.

1z would have 7mm stems though, right?

These AAZ heads, and changes made along the way are definitely confusing (8mm vs 7mm, single versus double springs, etc).

I had excellent service from techtonics tuning when re-doing the AAZ head for me.

They had the same issues with different valve lengths, but they were able to get me the correct ones.

Steve.

It would appear that for the 1Z, 8mm to 7mm changeover was about feb 1996. No length change.
AAZ changed around November 1995.  What a 'Cluster F...'

Ah, maybe not exactly what i am looking for, but perhaps I am on the right track finally!

for a 1997 jetta turbo diesel, RockAuto lists AAZ, ALE, and AFN engines - ALE and AAZ with 7.950 diameter stems - and lists the AE part number V94011 as having a 7.950mm diameter stem and 96.850mm length for an ALE or AHU engine!

I think i just figured out where my valves came from!

'course, they want $30 to ship it from the UK.

Where was a 1997 Jetta sold? It really is a minefield.

Ahh, the wonderful world of VW IDI ;)

Mark could possibly clarify but "they" don't get much of that 30 bucks.

Turns out that rockauto has some weird blindness about the 1Z engine, but early 1Z heads had the same valves as ALE engines.

And new replacement 8mm valves in ALE/1Z spec dried up in the usa over a decade ago.

There are a bunch of posts about it over on the tdiclub fora, but i got kicked out of their 'club' so i can't post there.

It would be great to find a valve that doesn't need trans atlantic shipping but if i can't i will go ahead and order from rockauto on monday or tuesday.

$30 shipping isn't that bad  these days. Autohauze charged me $56 across the pond over 5 years ago. So my purchase of $22 for four cylinders worth of rings,  became 3 sets, and a bunch of other stuff. Still, VW [UK]was asking £100 per cylinder.

...I'm clearly not paying attention here. I thought you were looking for AAZ valves. Do you actually have something different?
