My dad is considering getting a Geo Tracker that isn't holding compression in cylinder 2. It is a slushbox (he needs a slushbox).

He would be willing to pay at most $1000 to get a replacement 1.6 gasser in there (installed).

However... the fuel economy ratings SUCK for the 1.6 gasser.

He'd be willing to pay a little more to get a 1.6TD in there.

How involved would this be, to put a 1.6TD in it? How much would it cost (estimated)?

All prices in USD. I don't think he'd be willing to go to Canada to get the engine.

I think about $1000.There is a site that sells the parts need to do the swap for a resonable price i have it but i can not find it right now but i know someone eles on here will give it to you if i do not find it.Also one or more members here have a Zunk with the done.[/url]

That $1000 figure is just for the kit, not including the engine right? I've found it very hard to find the TD engines in the US, so if he's not willing to go to canada for it, the chances of finding a used TD for cheap seems pretty low.

Well, Canada is now fair game.

Apparently, this Tracker is *VERY* nice, just has an engine that's nearly scrap metal.

My dad was even thinking TDI, but that'd be *WAY* out of his budget and too complex with electricals.

Could you PM me with how much it would cost? He's got a pickup, so he could get it easily.

Also, this one's for the Ohio people: can you guys recommend a shop to do this?

IMO look for a nice mkI or mkII 1.6D or TD and stick a slushy in there.. can usually get an auto box for free especially in the spring... garage cleaning.

Yeah, but a Geo Tracker has more of what he needs when it comes to size.

It rides high (good), it's big (good), he can get in and out of it easily (good), and for what it is it's economical. And, if diesel's fair game, it'll get awesome economy.

Anyway, anyone got a kit that ISN'T the Acme Adapters kit?

Dr. Diesel? (I know you've got a Sunrunner that you're putting a 1.9TD into...)

It needs to work on a slushbox, and the engine + adapter can't cost more than $1000, preferably with modified gearing such that the tranny is in the optimal rev range for the diesel - the gasser has peak horsepower at 5600 RPMs.

how much does a 1.6TD go for down there? i know they are a lot harder to find than up here. there are some local guys who might be able to ship one down to you...

Well, it's starting to look cost prohibitive to do this.

We found a 1.6 Suzuki gasser with 100K miles on it for (USD, of course) $550, FWIW.

As for engine cost, let's just say that a 1.6TD donor car costs about as much as a 1.9TDI donor car around here, if it's wrecked. And a rebuilt? $3000 before the core charge, IIRC.

check out acmeadapters.com That's where I bought my kit from. I don't believe they make a kit for autos.

OK, so Acme's the only way to go.

Note the $250 option for an auto.

Well, the cost of an Acme means that the only cost-effective option will be a replacement gasser. $795 + $250 eats up the budget for the adaptor AND the engine, and that's just the adaptor.
