Building 1.6 TD engine for power

Hello all,
this Forum is a whealth of info on Volkswagen Diesel engines.
Now I have the folowing Question:
Bought a 1V diesel engine, GTD Fuel Pump and Corrado G60 Intercooler.
With all these parts can I achieve about 90 HP or more from the 1V engine?

No problem getting that engine up to 90 hp. The intercooler will certainly go a long way. Don't forget you can easily and cheaply add a boost guage and controller and up the boost - even if only a few PSI - you'll get some gains from that.

Trow away this intercooler as far as you can.... :roll:
I don't think you can find a worse intercooler. Ok it is working better than without an intercooler.
I did a flow / cooling test on also this intercooler and it has the worst flow. The 90ps TDI one is not much bigger and a lot better.
The best I found is from an Iveco Turbo Daily (small italian) truck in europe. Good flow and very good cooling.

how can you do a flow ore PSI-prussure-drop test?
If it is to small, you can make a water to air from it.
Otherwise taking a bigger IC

Hmmm a little bit late with responding...

One of my friends is analysing airflow for his job. I gave him a couple of IC's
He checked them on how much flow the IC's had and the cooling efficency.
The one from the Daily and the one from the VW Transporter T5 came out best, after that the Mercedes sprinter/VW LT IC.

i've decided to go air/water on my vehicle. reason being is that i want to keep my a/c

i'm still debating on whether or not to run the circulating pump on a thermostat...
water/air intercoolers are the best imo... more parts but less likely to get heat soak. water can hold lots of heat, and so it can work against the intercooling but with a good heat exchanger it shouldn't be a problem.

Did your friend ever test a GTD intercooler? I know several people knock it as being inefficient, but it is a folded 'through' and turbulence being a factor in i/c operation.... MAYBE its the poor siting of the i/c that was the limiting factor.

all you need for an IC is a thermostatically controlled fan to eliminate heat soak....

the GTD intercooler looks like its really big... and bigger is better

sounds like a stupid quastoin, but i saw the 2 answers on the internet so i dont know it anymore :?

in theory the bigger the IC the better. the cooling effects of the IC will benefit more than the extra 1-2 psi that you will achieve without an IC. of course if the IC's flow is absolutely rediculously bad, then yea i can see it being a bad thing... obviously... :lol:
my plan is to install a nice huge thin rad in the front to cool the water in my air/water IC. all that nice stuff in front though... hopefully i get enough airflow from my fan!!!

yeah i understand, but i want the turbo spooling up as quick as it can, i also will use waterinjection, so what is the best for the less lag, IC or not?

IC with long tubes going everywhere is going to make the boost come on a few seconds later, but the actual spooling has to do more with the turbine side of the turbo. get a larger DP if you want quicker spooling.
if you don't mind filling up your spray bottle every once in a while, then i would say that would be your best bet, as boost would develop virtually instantly, and you have the cooling effects/power boost from methanol (assuming you're going to use washer fluid...)
only thing i've been wondering about, is what about the detergents in windshield washing fluid??? it has to be bad for the engine... or does it combust from the high heat of the diesel engine?
other systems include actually spraying the intercooler fins with water, which GREATLY increases intercooler efficiency, and virtually eliminates heat soak. after all, when water evaporates it takes with it a LOT of heat!
