Why was the Timing Cover thread deleted?
« on: November 22, 2013, 06:01:21 am »
The thread had some inappropriate personal comments by a couple members, but also a fair number of on-points posts by myself and others.  The topic also comes up repeatedly.  Having a thread to link to with the pros and cons of each side would be valuable.  IMO, deleting the thread was throwing the baby out with the bathwater and an example of the worst kind of moderation.

I agree. I may start another thread on this in the future so we can do just as you say.

So that a moderator who disagrees with your viewpoint can delete the thread again??  Personally I don't mind if 8V deletes every post he ever made but deleting other people's posts that are within the rules of the forum in a thread that he didn't start is an abject abuse of power.

Pointless thread it were. I meant to lock not delete. My apologies fellas. I was moderating from my phone and the buttons are side by side. Honest mistake.

I want to say this too... my comment of "scary  :o" that initiated the whole ordeal was not meant as a sarcastic remark but rather a genuine concern and an inquiry as to reasoning.

The unknown is scary, you dont know if a rock will destroy your engine. Or if granny will pull out in front of you and ruin your day too.

I have an opinion as a human with rights the same as you, it is one of those rights being a free citizen to argue my opinion in my favour, the same as you all do. Moderator or not, I have opinions. It is your choice on how you wish to perceive them. It is also your right to stand up for your opinion.

Start another thread and keep it civil, I'm cool with that.

I have no control over old ladies or rocks but i can leave the cover over my timing belt to save my engine. I have no problem with anyone omitting the timing cover but I think for the sake of newbies there should be a disclaimer.

Years ago, on my first '79 Rabbit (which was the most enjoyable out of all of these since), I accidentally dropped a very small bolt into the belt area while I had the top timing belt cover off and the engine was running. Immediately, the belt pulled it in-between the bottom pulley and the belt, and instantly, the belt went off one tooth. I was lucky as it was only one tooth. I learned about this early-on and never did let anything like that happen again.

Run with covers in place. They also help to keep moisture out of the pulley tensioners (splash) and preserve the lube in it's bearing.
The mask and the shot(s) are actually an IQ test. If you are wearing or circulating, you just failed the test. I can't feel sorry for you.

Just saying, Libby needs to have been granted moderator status a long time ago. He's legit in every way, and a huge contributor of sound knowledge and great advice to these forums.
