1.6 eco hits about 3800 rpm and falls on its face.
« on: September 19, 2013, 05:51:50 am »
I didn't drive my mk2 eco for a few months because I had it apart putting a trans in it. I finally got it back on the road last night and it runs great but at about 3800 rpm its loses all power. Ussually only happens in 3rd gear. It has an 85ish td pump resealed by 8v. it did have a lift pump on it but I took it off for my mtdi and replaced it with some fuel hose its back where the water seperator used to be. While it was sitting I did pull the Case pressure valve to look at it and compare it to
the tdi valve but it wasn't off more than 10 minutes. Could the fuel line I used be to small causing a restriction? I doubt its the fuel filter it probably doesn't even have 10000 miles on it. No air at idle or reving by hand.

If you were messing with the lines it could be the fuel filter. I have had junk from a farm tank plug a brand new filter in less than 40 miles. Without a vacuum gauge on the fuel filter you are just guessing. It is easy to do and I would start there.

Also usually when using hose to patch the hard line you slip a larger diameter hose over the hard line, so there should n't be a restriction if that is the case.

If the lift pump was fighting a clogging tank strainer, it won't have gotten any better.
Do ECOs have the  blow off  valve thing? letting your boost out makes it fall on its face like no other.

What happens when it falls on it's face? Does it stumble and cough a bit or just hit a wall or do you shift and carry on like everything is normal?

I recall that stock ECOs don't have a BOV.

I'd bottle feed it to eliminate the supply lines and test-drive.

A transparent in-line filter placed in the return line might show if there is air seeping into the IP. The tiny bubbles are hard to see when the flow rate is high.

I might check internal pressure, at high rpm there might be cavitation if the internal pressure is too low.

also if you pulled that pressure valve did you set it back perfectly? That could cause the pressure problem TD is talking about.

The pressure is adjusted by pushing the little plug lower or higher in the regulator.  If you didn't mess with the plug in the top or the little clamp thingy on the bottom, then you didn't adjust the pressure.  That said, if the lower o-ring was damaged on installation, the pressure would be affected.

Which turbo?

Might it just be the difference between the k24 and the k14?

I just noticed that I could get my GT-15 (similar to a K03) to easily provide enough air (non inter cooled) to rocket my car from 1700-3900 in 5th gear today whilst test'n'tuning. I would think any turbo bigger than that should have no issue..

ps.. 3900 in 5th = 154/95 Friggan fast on a country back road!

Nut found its way off the the stop solenoid so when the engine vibe'd a certain way the tab would lose contact for split a second. She runs great and the accel is much nicer with the 3.94 r&p.
