Never had a car come in with a suspected broken belt before it was due.

How could it have come in with a broken belt?  ;)

My friend has an ALH  that's had 2 belts break before the  interval, not including  the failure 6K after the dealer installed a new belt without replacing the bent valves.  This is  two different VW built motors, because the first one was  utterly destroyed when the bent valve dropped its head into the works.

I'm certainly not recommending going more that 50-60,000kms.I think there is some confusion when converting metric and imperial i.e. 100,000 kms is 60,000 miles. But back in the 80's and early 90's we weren't changing them anywhere before that kind of milage. BTW the 16v Passats were ripping the belts at the crank pulley, especially when it got cold and with an auto transmission.

2.0 16v break cam gears too when belts break.. tooth right off it... ive also seen 1.8 16v aaz the crank gear..

no i say 100,000 miles back then on diesels... my b3 has 93k and 11.25 years on it... ordered up new belt to do it as i fear age more then milage... back in high school.. i also did the 100k.. but that took me 14 mo... 168k in 2 years baby... sep 90 91k on it... by time i gradded had 230k on it... and when stuck it all in my caddy had 268k on it.. :D

too many stupid times at 0.82/gal...  gotta rember i was running sc to ohio a few times a year too... would take me 9.5 to 10.5 hr each way... average sp[eed 8mph over speed limit... :P 65 back then... add stops.. :P how fast was i goin... thru wv hills on i77 and all...  why does this matter... what rpm am i running a diesel at...

wonder how my life would be different if it had a turbo... that head is currently on my b3..... and was used when i installed it on the 91k mile car in 90...  over 300k... i rebuilt it in 96 when i ported/polished it and added a bae turbo kit to it.. put on b3 wagon in 07 when i cracked its head... :(

my kubvan is also 1st pump ive modded.. on mt tdi-m.. simple gov mod on it... stock pumps for me too...

always had quick diesels... that were stock internals with grewat success... must be why im so deep in them,..

I forgot to also say make sure you get a new tensioner/idler pulley when you do new belt.
