I grew up an airline brat, my mother has 45 years with UAL and is still flying, my father worked nearly 40 in HR. I briefly considered becoming a ramp rat and moving to Oahu many years ago I'm glad I didn't, the travel benefits suck now days anyhow, no seats on planes anymore.

Boy, you said it. I always buy back-up tickets on other airlines when I travel out of the country. As management I used to have a higher boarding priority when we were Continental, but the merger f**ked that deal.
A lot of guys don't even use the travel... to which I say you have to be mentally deficient to stay in the airlines if you don't want to travel.

Man, JC. Just kick me when I am down{ :) }. I HATE flying, but I was driving a cab in my hometown 12 hours a day making what I would make at  LaGuardia with 4 less hours to work (and that is with commute from Suffolk). I have and will use the benefits, but I am a big scaredy cat on a flight. Went to Ireland with my folks  (RIP) in 2006, and my Mom shook her head when I jumped at the turbulence. Broke my balls about running into burning buildings and shaking at turbulence..lol. Told her I can bail out of a 4th floor window, cant do S**t at 38,000 feet. Waiting on the America/Ireland Causeway. But not holding my breath........

Stay safe, stay well. Jimmy.

Signed a lease for this place yesterday. I've always played with cars 'on the side'... it's time to do it right.

Good luck.  Tough to start a business these days, but we will always need mechanics.

I'm half tempted to call you up and ask for a position.  Hey, I'd be close(ish)!

I also forgot to say what my profession is.  I'm a technician at the local Volkswagen/Audi/Porsche dealership.  Because that's just a GREAT way to spend my waking hours!  >:(

Thanks guys. The deal was too good to pass up. My main thing will be sales, but I'll be open to service as well. No one in a 40 mile radius works on European stuff... rednecks.

Andy, stop by and introduce yourself sometime. I was in your neck of the woods the other day to pick up a mk3.

All that shiny and sharp metal would be worrisome for me.  I used to teach and climb trees for cone collection, wildlife surveys, and in the midst of winter we would do the collections from the trees in the tree improvement program.  Scion collections for grafting onto root stock in the orchards.

The only reason to actually climb a tree is to rappel down.  Later in the business we learned that ascenders were faster to use than ropes and spurs.  So I got real good with tossing a shot bag with parachute cord attached to it to pull my ropes up.

Was the best part of the job.  At least until winter rolled around.  Very cold, windy and hard to tie a good knot with frozen fingers.  Never punished my privates with hands that cold since.  Sometimes desperate times call for desperate measures.

Im a Quantity Surveyor for a construction firm in Ireland as my day job.
Due to the recession money is sooo tight that i spend my days constantly arguing with sub contractors about money. It gets very tiresome after a while and ive often thought of a career change.

I would fix a few friends cars for them at the weekend and i was also tempted to set up as a service mechanic but the drop in salary and unpredictability of the salary is what puts me off going out on my own.

I'll continue the technical/maintenance trend... professional mechanical engineering student, heavily involved with Formula SAE in suspension/drivetrain design, but have a professional degree/diploma as a 'technologist'. Summer work consists of working for a ship/industrial repair company doing everything from fleet truck maintenance to mechanical repairs on large ships... main engines, pumps, props, you name it. There's always the odd sensation of standing on the crankshaft and working on the underside of the piston assembly... The largest has been a 7 cyl Wartsila pumping out 50 000+ hp @ 105rpm  :P

Holy old thread bump :D

I'd love to come work in NY, just that I'm halfway around the world.

That looks like a pretty old machine, never seen such old backhoes kicking around here :)
