Always seen a lot of aircraft types into VW-D's.  I don't think it's coincidence.   

Both are maintenance intensive, and we all love to hate 'em  ;D

i am a biomedical equipment technician

i work for a small company but we do lots of different types of medical equipment, from ems equipment, vital signs monitoring, life support equipment, and also pft machines(lung testing)

most of our work is shipped in from all over the country so i may have fixed something that was used on you who knows.

I did this part-time when I was in school in Daytona, at an Ormond Beach hospital. I should have stuck with it instead of aviation.  ???  Nice to have free health care.

definitely man its something different everyday, i really enjoy it, its a little bit of electronics, a little bit of pneumatics, and plenty of mechanical type stuff, and also alot of dealing with customers explaining to them how things work and why their equipment is fine but there is user error haha, plus i get to travel a fair amount which is always interesting.  i think if u actually work at a hospital the pay is really good.  i do alright especially considering i only have a highschool education.  i do wish i had better benefits tho, my insurance isn't bad but i don't have eye or dental.

I work for a major aircraft manufacturer in Seattle.  Hired to do all types of building maintenance and repairs, got sent north to build some of the airplanes for a few years.  Finally got back to doing the maintenance again....Plumbing, Electrical, Mechanical, HVAC...you name it.

I grew up an airline brat, my mother has 45 years with UAL and is still flying, my father worked nearly 40 in HR. I briefly considered becoming a ramp rat and moving to Oahu many years ago I'm glad I didn't, the travel benefits suck now days anyhow, no seats on planes anymore.

My venture into vw's starts with my Uncle who is/was huge in the air force. He always had a vw diesel or air cooled to play with.

Boy, you said it. I always buy back-up tickets on other airlines when I travel out of the country. As management I used to have a higher boarding priority when we were Continental, but the merger f**ked that deal.
A lot of guys don't even use the travel... to which I say you have to be mentally deficient to stay in the airlines if you don't want to travel.

i bow to the master... my problem porsche is alive once more.. he gave me a tip to try after i saw this and hit him up in pm.. no one.. even dealer could fill me in on hit it test.. they want to change/sell parts... i wanted to be a mechanic and know it was what was wrong.. before buying $$$$$$ comp..

Buying a full fare day of ticket on BA to get out of Heathrow was the final straw for me. I might ride a companion pass for a weekend trip somewhere reasonably close like Seattle or San Diego but with two young children that's pretty much off the table now as well.

I am a subcontract administrator (upscale buyer) for the world's largest aerospace company.  Our local business in in the military simulation industry.

There are lots of mechanics and mechanically inclined people here.  I feel like a moron in this group.  I am an IT manager/administrator and an adjunct professor of IT at a community college. 

I am also quite new to the group.  Definitely new to Mk1 and IDI diesels.  I am a veteran VAG gasoline owner, and veteran Mk4 TDI owner.  This older stuff is a trip! :)

PhunkFX, Don't be to down on yourself.  One of the reasons I choose the IDI diesel is due to the need for hands on changes.  Not some weird software sensor interaction model.  ECU to me means Entirely Crappy Upgrade.  Given the level of engineering that goes into any engine why manipulate it with electronic components?  To do away with folks like us and keep them "maintenance free"   Bah Humbug.  I would never have tried building all my own computers since 1994 if I didn't know what I know about nuts and bolts.

Keep with us, there is power in knowledge of any sort.

Dude, I can barely change my own oil. And many technical things guys post on here I have no idea what it means, but the knowledge when I need it, the camaraderie, the humor makes this a great site to hang out in. One member put a rebuilt engine in my 89, had Giles do the IP, TechTronics DP and exhaust manifold. Even with hauling it up there and back, I saved a fortune if I had it done here in NY. I put 600 miles a week on it, and thanks to Tyler(burn your money), I had a local guy fix my fan issues (wallet's lighter, but I 'm happy). If I can find the time, I am arranging for Tyler to add a turbo and drive it to Canada. I had the option of a TD with 180k, but I went with the 0 mile N/A. Still no regrets, but NYC traffic is torture on the NA, so time for some more pep.  Like everyone else, time is tough for anyone to have a site GTG, but one day.... IMO, still the best VW diesel site. And there are some good ones.
