• Here is a puzzler...
  
   I replaced the low\high beams with Auto Pal halogen units and bulbs. The high only headlamps haven't been touched.
  
  Now with lows on, the the other headlights ( high only) are on faintly.
  
  If I unplug the low head lamps, the high beam (only) headlamps work as they should. (not on faintly when in lights are on low)
  
  Any ideas?
  
  I've ran a good ground to car interior, have relays\ harness on the way.
  
  
  Is it the light switch, or auto pal bulbs are "leaking" voltage to the high only head lamps?

  they are wired differently..
  
  all 3 wires need rewired to bulb properly... different spots...

   Where is the screw up?  I thought sealed beam to Halogen bulb still has the same 3 prongs wired the same way?

• not the little squares.., i do not have any to look at to tell which is what.. but round, big square, h4 share same plug and wiring.. little square same plug.. differently wired...
  
  i convert mine when i add h4 in... but.. my 81coupe has crappy sealeds in it., .kubvan has hid.. my red car harness was modded/used in something else.. my b3 has h1s... so i lack the h4 pin out to look at..
  
  relay them too... with real good grounds..

  I have had this issue also, and it is an easy fix. The stock headlights and wiring are not the same as an H4 bulb. The three prongs need rearranging. It is simple as pop them out and re pin it.
  
  What is happening is the low beams are grounding through the high beam circuit, and thus the high beams ground. There is a little left over to dimly light the high beams by doing so. It does look kinda cool eh?
  
  After I figured out my issue, I almost wanted to leave it.. cause it looks BADASS.

• kills the h4 bulb in less then a hr if you do too... its gounded wrong.. th ewires even though same plug are wired differently...
  
  the "little" squares are what you have... in sealed beam... only usa/na used those pos lights.. rest of world got h4.. they are wired differently...
  
  to buy new in box small squares from HELLA they come with a sweet plug in adapter for this.. used mine for headlight relay harnesses..

• actually go look at your plugs for both high and low...
  
  see if white and brown in same place? i bet they are NOT... looking at mine they not...
  
  arrange the low/high to be same as the high.. but yellow goes in 3rd place... im thinking thats the trick..
  
  mr 8v... you like that effect? do you have any idea what a "city light" is? euro stuff has a parking light in the headlamp vs a orange one.. 5w bulb gives same effect.. years ago.. i till have a set.. they sold a washer to slip in with you h4 bulbs to add in a city light.. autotech, techtonics sold them.. big $ and they were cheezy.. need to hook up the ones in my kubvan.. those 200mm "big squares" have them built in.. just no hook up as i di dnot.. LOL.. my b3, mk 84 coupe always had them wired.. i have th echeezy adapter to make city lights as they came with a car i got.. i always planned to use them in a car with them built in.. so i could wire in benz map light bulbs.. like 25w.. they fit the citylight holders, so i could add 25w to my headlight wattage (i tried this and it brighter then a flashlight int he dark by its self).. and still have a 5w parking light on my coupe..

  No way, my brother ran them like this for nearly 7 months. lol I know they are wired differently, I told him they need changing haha. There should be no added strain on anything really.. the power is grounding through the high beams power side and through the high beams ground.

  The German mk1 Jetta has white/yellow/brown for lows, and white/brown for highs. Yellow is low, white is high.

  Love the city light look. When I ordered my 4 Autopal headlights (great quality btw..) I asked for all four with city lights, but the order got botched and I got all four without.. too bad, soo cool. Essentially running lights, but not high beams at half power. A smaller, cheaper, easier to replace bulb .
  
  If you want higher wattage, relay the wiring and add bigger bulbs. H4 has 90/110w bulbs, I know I have two sets ! lol. Before the HID install, I had the two low beams with 90/110w, two highs with 100w, and my two fogs with 100w bulbs as well. DAYUM. Can you say 620W of light output!? Dunno the lumens, but I have more now with the 55w bi-xenon 4300k HID's.

  Got the email, I am a lazy bum. haha I do not have any of the stock mk1 under-hood wiring left.. but I will do best by memory as I can.

  hids are sick in the right housing... but really crappy in bad ones.. hella = win but i really wanna try the ones in the link... the old hella 550 and 550ff are so different in light output.. id say 80% more.. i want to see what hid's are like in them..
  
  my 84 that i sold 2x i killed h4 that way sir in under a hr..
  
  did you notice how a hid = maybe 5-10amp max vs a 80/100? the alt load i do not even notice on a 100amp gauge vs the 30ish or so h4s pull..

  Have a few wiring questions about my mk1 Jetta.
  
  I put a mk2 1.6td into the Jetta. Actually got it running\driving around today. Exhaust on Monday - then inspection - hopefully will be on the road this week.
  
  I can't figure out the temp gauge wiring in the engine compartment.
  
  The mk2 1.6td has a 2 wire temp sensor - which colored wires  from the Mk1 harness go to it?  Also - does the glow plug timer read from the same sensor?  If not what colored wires would go to the second  temp sensor on the mk2 1.6td?
  
  I have about  3-4 wires that are end all around the back of the head - but not sure which one goes where?  ( I think yellow, yellow/red, blue and another )  I do have another blue one on the oil pressure sensor on the back of the head - which I think belongs there.

• The yellow was definitely the heads low pressure oil sensor.. and the blue I believe was the high pressure at the filter mount.

  I have the euro cut small squares, so the HID does well in them. its the round DOT housings they do bad in.
  
  Very low amperage to run the HID ballasts and bulbs.

  2 wire switch easy,, 1side ground.. black sensor right? need 2 black ones...
  
  i myself prefer aluminum necks vs those crappy will leak at somepoint plastic ones.. 
  
  did it have ac, shiftlight, and year? the mk1... 81 is one, 82 is another then 83/84 same.. they kept playing with oil pressure wire colors..
  
  temp lights, gauges, so on work really easy.. the only real guess what which is which is the 2 oil pressure wires.. but if hooked up backwards you will know on the 1st drive..
  
  ground the wire...
  
  if temp gauge will maxhot it..
  if glow light will make it light up
  if blue alt wire makes it light up
  oil switches.. makes it light up.. 2 of them.. same light..
  vdo temp/op so on.. ground = pegged out if you forgot what whent where.
  
  now ac.. green wire.. would have went to the front neck, 2 wire switch.. other side went to ac comp.. the mk2 is white plug sensor on side of head neck...
  
  shift lights goto pump.. but there is a duel wire pigtail that goes towards back up light switch.. in same harness that your playing with..
  
  yes the glow/temp are 2 seperate sensors.. cannot piggyback.. but im dumbfounded.. side of head = white for ac.. front neck has how many? 1 or 2 spots? tdi went to 4 wire sensor to do duel out of 1.. you sure its not 4 wire?
  
  i do not use the temp sensor for glow plugs.. i find that either it sux ass in the cold.. or in the hot it does not kick on for 5 or so sec before i hit the key.. i just count.. hit the key.. i use the light to make sure the system powers up by default..
