    I have a VW problem.
Enough tools to change the v-belts, a combination screwdriver and a flashlight.
Multimeter, wirecutters, tape.
One gallon of coolant, two quarts of motor oil & one gallon of ATF (reserve fuel).
Spare belts.

Credit card, cellphone.

I always tote around a full box of practically everything I have weighing perhaps 60 pounds, which is stupid.  It has probably cost me $100 in fuel in 20 years and I have never needed it.  Maybe that's because I tend to PM overkill most things...

I'd say if you think your V-belts or hoses are bad, change them beforehand.  Or carry them and the tools.

how big does it need to be people.... fact the tools required to strip, rebuild a vw will fit in a paper bag... the list...

----------------note on sockets.. do one set shallow, other deep... if room is issue.. once you break bolt free.. use other size tool i tend to do deep 3/8 and shallow 1/4 for room thoughts.. if i can fiut 3/8 to that.. 1/4 no prob.. but other way round..

8mm-19mm 3/8 sockets deep
1", 3", 6" 3/8 extensions
small, long 3/8 rachet

5mm-15mm 1/4 sockets shallow
1", 3" 6" extensions
ratchet

1/2" breaker bar, ratchet, 13-19,22, 24, 32.... ---18, 21 for mk3+
extension, 3" 6"

screw driver set

test light

plier set

pair of watch making pliers imo specialty tool.. but great for filters... kinda big for travle bag though...

7mm-22mm wrenches... wratchiting flex head if only 1 set... those most versatile wrench ever.. never broken one..

bag of allen wrenches... 5mm, 6mm, 8mm, 10mm sockets nice too.. but a bag at min..

8mm xzn for axle bolts.. newer axels 10mm xzn, 14mm xzn for mk5 rear brakes.. 12mm xzn for head bolts.... pick and choose.. but none take up much room..

adapter set for 3/8 to 1/2 so on..

small hammer

electrical pliers

all that would fit in a aluminum breve case...

I try to take stupid parts like the 2.00 ignition switch as no parts store will have one if you need it. That is only if I am planning a long trip that I am going to stay away once there. Otherwise I would rig something to start it and keep it running. Like the one part CRSMP5 forgot to mention I know he has is the jumper wire approx. 3 foot long with alligator clips. If you need to bypass the wiring for the shut off selinoid or make the fan run non stop if it won't kick on. I usually always have an extra diesel fuel filter as you never know when you could fill it full of crud and need it.
Tools, same as CRSMP5 list, especially my set of 6-19mm gear wrench flex head. I don't know what I ever did without those.

If you do enough maintenance you wont need anything. Just kidding. Add all of the above tools plus some pvc connectors for when your radiator hoses decide to blow out randomly. Saved my butt and stayed on the car for 4 years.

if you wanna get into crap like that......

rad cap/overflow for 88+ with big goofy one..... be like me.. $20 for used... $10 for new 3 day away.... and those ones screw you when the o-ring swells and you remove cap to check level as yea right see thru.. lol...

that 1 thing bout ***ed me... more then 25qt oil.. turns out boost leak and blown turbo for 4400 miles.. :D still made 15psi and towed car... but loosing your coolent when pressure.. that cap sucked arss... but $20 used less then motel, no heat if car leaks.. for $10 cap...

older bottle cars... roll electrical tape... wrap hose leve cap off no issue... too bad round bottle cannot do like that..

fuses

sppade style jumper wire to jump bad relay..

Jumper wire is a good tip.

I was towing from Detroit to NYC and IIRC, a fan relay  or thermo switch failed. I just flipped the dash control to AC and let the fan run (mighta swapped wires so it ran on high speed).

I have a set of those gear wrenches, I've had them for over 10 years at least and they're great, that come with me pretty much everywhere in a small bag. Ordinary wrenches would do though. Also, screwdrivers, pocket knife, belts, tape and zip ties. I have a spare ignition switch because they often fail but I wouldn't take it with me because you can achieve the same result with the jumper wire that was mentioned. Spare injection lines might not be a bad idea if you have a set.

I also like to carry something like a sledgehammer or baseball bat under the seat, which can be used to break glass if you need to or as a blunt force weapon.
