Help me price this cabby for a friend.
« on: May 25, 2013, 12:46:39 pm »
Hey I'm trying to figure out how to price this cabby for a friend. He is an older gentlman and really doesn't know how to do anything with the internet so he's trying to figure out how to sell his cabby which I am willing to help out with. But I'm not really sure how to value one of these either.

It's a 1990, The interior is perfect, the exterior has a dent, some rust, and the roof is basically shot. Mechanically it seems sound, though it's been sitting for quite awhile so I'm certain it needs some things. It definitely has an exhaust leak somewhere, probably around the headers, but it gets quieter after the engine warms up. I didn't drive it but up and down the driveway since the tags are expired but the clutch seems fine and the brakes worked.

But I'm trying to figure out what kind of price point we should sell this for. He is hoping for around 3-4 Grand since it's all original parts (minus the stereo install) and since it was garaged most of it's life and the paint is still in good/great condition. I told him he probably won't see that. But since it is an unmodified decent condition cabby he might be able to get something out of it. What do you guys think?

Here's some pictures:

We're talking about a Cabriolet, right?
Those things don't have much value around here. Examples in good condition go for about $2000.
Long before the internet, they had this thing called the Kelley Blue Book to price cars... It's kbb.com now, I put in a 1993 (oldest year they let me use) loaded Cabriolet in excellent condition for Reston, Virginia and they still only came up with a value of $1500.

I think you are going to have a tough time getting anywhere near that 3-4 K for that thing.  The top is toast so you are looking at 3 hundred to 650 for a new one.  Depending on who does the work, you or a shop.  The thing needs to be clean and polish out the rust marks on the rear or anywhere else as each one will cost you a 100 dollar deduction from the price.  With the rust holes in the windshield you better ease up the carpet to be sure the floor boards are not rotten out.  Maybe a look from underneath will show it.

It has the cabby bumpers and side skirts on it so that is a bonus but other than that I see nothing particularly great about this one.  I have seen cars like this sell over here on the west coast for about 2200 to 1250.  Hate to be a downer on that but they are not the most useful cars due to the convertible top.  Not a winter car at all.

That means it isn't an all season car.  Someone will buy it as a second run about in the spring to early fall then need to back it into a garage or someplace out of the snow.

Oh, clean it all up and get rid of those nasty pictures.  Nothing hurts more than pictures of dirty cars with rust on them.
Just my take on it.  DAS

Fair enough ! I appreciate the input! I think if we cleaned it up a bit he might be able to fetch 1500. Honestly I wasn't really thinking more than 1000 but you guys seem more optimistic. But I also bought my rabbit for 600 and its a diesel so I count that as a bit more valuable am rare than a silly gasser.

Also there is a perfect condition like minty fresh cabriolet in town for 2500 so he obviously can't compete on that...

I was going to suggest you check the local craigslist but there isn't much there to look at.  Check the Portland/Salem OR. area that is my knowledge base on what price for what quality at this time of the year.

For example there are several trucks that range from 1500 to 7500 for example.  And you get what you pay for.  A few weeks ago there seemed to be a rash of convertibles, Cabbies, that showed up.  25 to 1500 was the range.  I bet it was the sun and 90 degree weather that had folks thinking, Sell the convertible quick.

Edited to clarity and additional rambling.

Cabby, as in cabriolet not caddy as in rabbit truck. Did you read the thread?

Around here a rusty one is worth it's weight in scrap. A decent one will fetch 1-2000 and a really nice one might reach 4k. Occasionally you see a modded one but for the most part they just aren't enthusiasts cars, no reason to spend the time and money restoring one.

Sorry for the confusion.  I did mean the trucks as an example of wide price range but not as prices for you helping the buddy get the most out of his.  I think the Cabbys on the local pages range from 2500 to 1500.  Ignore those 2 dollar ones as those are scrappers that put that value on them to make sure you see their ad first if sorting by price.

Again I did mix the thoughts in the thread.  Maybe will edit to two paragraphs now.

I wasn't being optimistic. I was quoting a price for a "good" example. The one you posted would be junkyard material around here, sorry. People here are not used to seeing any rust on a vehicle and it would be viewed as a serious defect. But that's why you should research this locally, try to find other examples in your area because these things do vary based on geographic location and conditions of supply and demand for various vehicles are different. Take 300Ds and old Volvos, they're a dime a dozen around here, but I've heard clean examples can fetch good money on the east coast.

id be ready to shell out 3k for a nice cabby, but to me this isn't a nice one, the top, rust, missing paint on bunpers, and dent are what would send me running those couple things could end up being very pricy to fix especially the top and windshield rust.  and also if the cars been sitting for a long time i wouldn't be too likely to buy it for very much, although the mk1 stuffs cheap to repair, a bunch of small parts could end up nickel and diming you.  it'd be a great car for a young car enthusiast to fix up.  it could really be made nice with a top and some paint.

also the rust on the hatch is usually from a bad trunk lock seal, sciroccos, jettas, cabriolets, and some audis all use the same seal i think its still available as well.

Yeah I mean honestly when the guy first talked to me he offered to give it to me and I could pay him later. But after seeing it I decided it wasn't worth all the work I'd have to put into it.

It seems a shame to scrap the perfect interior. I'm half considering offering him a few hundred and using it for parts... A perfect interior for my rabbit. Along with power windows and a straight front end... Tempting.

Okay so speaking of that. How much could be made on a part out of something like that ?

it'd be worth fixing up for the right price.  cabbys are fun as hell so long as you don't mind driving a girl car.

Haha yeah it would've been for my wife. But I would've secretly driven it every once in awhile.

Convertibles suck. Lets go sit in the blazing hot sun for hours on end. Yeah... right.

Up here good, clean examples will fetch 3000+ during the spring/summer. There aren't many of them around.

I paid $150 for mine, and that was because it had a 16v in it. It had more duct tape than sheet metal.
