Very cool.

In semi-related news, I saw/heard a running Volvo diesel for the first time ever yesterday.
Ever as in the last fifteen years that I've known they existed.
Was neat.  :)

they sound alot like the 5 cylinder Audi diesels..

neat cars, arent they?

ive heard both 240D, and 740TD engines in the last year..
92 Jetta GLI - Black, 1.6D w/ GT2056V turbo..
86 GTI - 4 Door, Med Twilight Gray, Tow Machine..
86 Audi Coupe GT - Tornado Red, All Stock.. WRECKED.
89 Toyota 4Runner - Dark Grey Metallic, LIFTED!

Turbo: exhaust gasses go into the turbocharger and spin it, witchcraft happens and you go faster.

I think I'd be really happy with a 240 M46 diesel wagon, that wasn't ragged to death and had a fighting chance under my care still.
Easier said than done though.

Or a TDI swap.  Which has been done with good results.

VW TDI in a 240, kid on turbobricks few years ago, mildly warmed TDI, end result was redblock turbo power and mid 30's MPG.
He drove it across Mexico or something nutty last I heard.

At one time last year I owned a Mk2 Jetta TD, and Audi 5000TD, and a 245 Volvo diesel, all at the same time. The 5grand is the only one that I miss.

The guy in question is my friend Josh who has a fabrication business here, I don't know if I'd call him a kid, he's in his 30s and married, lol, but yeah, he has the 240 wagon still, he drives it every day, and has put a lot of miles on it, yes, he drove it to the end of the Baja peninsula and back, and he just had the car painted, it's nice.

He's also put a Volvo diesel engine (well, a D24T so a 6 cylinder Volkswagen) in a Land Rover. He's really made a career out of doing these kind of swaps, does a lot of things with Honda engines and such, but not usually diesel. He's honestly a good guy who does very professional work. The Land Rover apparently used the same automatic transmission as the Volvo diesel but required a lot of body work to make it fit, the Volvo was fairly straightforward I think, he used the adapter plate intended for Suzuki Samurai swaps to couple the TDI to a Toyota RWD manual transmission and installed that in the Volvo.

In Europe, some have done the 5 cyl 2.5 TDI in the RWD Volvo cars too.

High compression gas pistons with a small decking or shaving the head gets around 17:1, and they run fine. Run better with more fuel and air.

17 : 1 isn't what I was thinking when I brainiaced this one.  I was more of the mind of 22 or slightly less as our normal is so high to begin with.  With all the recent discussion of tweaking timing and delayed injection for different purposes I had the idea of gas pistons due to the different head design.

Not planning on doing this one just thinking out loud.  Been a good discussion on several topics here.  We are so bad about off topic stuff.  Do we just lack focus?

Modello says diesels run a lot harder with a small combustion chamber.

I've worked on tons of gm6.5 engines. Not so impressed. Cracked heads cracked blocks cracked cranks. I guess they say the 6.2 was a little tougher but totally gutless. I did rebuild a 350 diesel that had like 40 k on it and it was whooped out. IMO the gm diesels werent so good. Wether it was the idiots who didnt know diesels blowing them up or a lame design id lean more toward they were a lame design
I think the 350 was rated around 95 or so hp. Thats alotta iron for the hp that my moped can make.
