What would happen IF?
« on: May 04, 2013, 09:27:47 pm »
Could you put gas engine pistons in a diesel and have it run a lower compression.  Seems like the dish in the top would reduce the overall volume slightly and one could run a bit of advance or more PSI to off set that.

Any wild Ideas out there?  Other than this one.

Turbo: exhaust gasses go into the turbocharger and spin it, witchcraft happens and you go faster.

It might work if you spun the motor at 5000 rpm long enough for it to get hot enough to start. It might run crappily. They ran old JD gas tractor motors on kerosene when they got good and hot, and through a carb no less.

wont the top design  of the piston not be suited for our specific flame travel?

If you use the gas head too, awesomeness can happen.

people used to take a diesel bottom end (complete)

put a big-valve solid lifter head on it, and spray as much nos to it as it could possibly handle!!

of course, it wont be a diesel anymore after you drop a gasser head on it..

That's pretty funny..

Random bit I recall, the domestic guys using GM v8 diesel blocks to build some very stout gas motors years ago.

yup.. they used to use the 5.7 "DX" block, fitted with olds 350 heads, and an ignition system..

AFAIK, all the LATER "DX" blocks had roller cams, as well as all 6/.2/6.5 engines..

Not stout enough for diesel use, but apparently makes a great gas race engine... Who would have thought?

I'd like to have an old GM wagon with a diesel 350, there's a number of folks that have worked out what they need to survive
apparently.  I've met just as many people that say VW and Volvo diesels constantly blow headgaskets and are junk as I have
saying the old GM auto diesels were junk, so I'm reserving judgement till I stumble across one.  Also, I'm a sucker.

im going from personal experience here, i worked on, and drove a 1983 oldsmodiesel cutlass cruiser (wagon) and it was not a bad car at all..

what kills those engines, is the lack of fuel filtration.. i installed a R12S filter on it upon getting the injection pump rebuilt.. the flex ring was going to hell, and it was leaking bad..

anyways, i got almost 25mpg with that big boat.. it didnt have ALOT of power, but it would most certainly get out of the way.. wasnt the SLOWEST car ive driven..

i had installed bosch duraterm glow plugs as well as a new timer and GP relay.. the car would start every time.. foot @ 1/4 throttle, let the glows go off, then hit the key.. it would start about as soon as the flywheel engaged the ring gear on the flywheel..

car was single owner tho, with only 87k on the clock, and had been maintained fairly well, from what i could tell..

had KYB gas-a-just shocks all the way around, and damn, that took the "boat" feel all but away..

I miss my 9C1 Caprice, and might have to build up a diesel B body sometime.
And I'm kinda pissed my new 96 Cummins isn't any faster than the 6.2 suburban :-\
It does have overdrive, so at least it's quieter on the highway I guess.
