I bet that most of the destitute live in cities. The same as for most people on this forum.
They have no way to grow crops of significance. Going off topic, chemical fertilizers and
hybridization have brought up the crop yields at least 3x in the past 30 years.  How could
you miss knowing that.

What are there now 8 billion people on the planet? That takes a lot of food.
Perhaps GMO can supplement the more natural sources of food.

GMO and petroleum based fertilizers do not produce more calories per acre the only reduce the labor costs. How many of the 7-8 billion people have anything better to do than farm organically?

I would add that the new technology allows more seeds to be put into the
ground. I dare say that every seed put into the ground will yield a plant with
several hundred seeds. There is a lot more energy that can come off an acre
than ever.

As far as eating GMO. Who knows if it safe to feed you or your dog or the cow
that you will eat. Food is not the only use for plants however.

You also have to realize that monocrops continuously grown on the same soil year after year will destroy the soil in a short amount of time. GMO crops are destroying the biodiversity of plants everywhere they are being cultivated. Not to mention colony collapse that is happening with bee's and is being strongly linked with a rise in gmo usage.

I see it as a grade scale. Grade A being open pollenation no chemicals added, Grade B being first gen. hybrid and some pesticides and chem fertilizers, and Grade C being the GMO hybrid and all the harshest chemicals that they were built to stand up to.

I prefer to not eat the stuff that was not really intended to eat. I try to eat healty when possible and pick from the Grade A list. That is why I posted the pic of the food sticker. If you want to avoid it there are things like that to do that are easy.

If you don't care or like GMO stuff that is fine with me. There is a market for it otherwise they wouldn't have made it, but I am not in the market. I have heard of studies they do with cattle and the GMO corn fed cattle have thinning intestines and said to have upset stomachs. That compared to the same strain of cattle that were fed non GMO. I would just rather wait 20 years and see what they have to say about it. Tons of things they made years ago they now say they probably shouldn't have, like margerine instead of butter or aspartamine-however you spell it- the main ingredient in nutra sweet and fake sugars.

Most of the farmers around here are doing crop rotation. They are family operations
with 600-3000 acre operations. When the principal owner passes it has been passed
down to the children. They want to keep it profitable forever. Sure most use fertilizers
as that helps with yields.

They plant seeds that are resistant to microorganisms and insects. They plant and
harvest with highly technological equipment. We have gone out to glean a field for
corn after they have finished harvesting and you can barely find an ear of corn per acre.  

The current US leadership (the president) is doing his best to force sales to outsiders
(large non resident corporations) He has instituted death taxes forcing the sale of
the property to pay for the tax.

I am fine with fertilizers and lime, it is way easier than planting a cover crop to till under. But last year and the year before we planted rye. Not only does it help when tilled in to release nutrients into the soil, but it helps tons in runoff. We had so much rain 2 years ago that a large portion of the field washed out. Then whatever you put in the field is now in the stream and down the water it goes.

I think its kinda hard to grow Non GMO corn for example, because the 90 billion nearby GMO plants will cross fertilize it.
