Hey guys, I know I have been asking a lot of questions about the 1.9's latly but i promis this will be the last one on the subject for quite some time.
Just so you all know where i stand im planing on buying a 1995 1.9td 5 door. the car is for sale at a garage and the guy only works on VW's. Now when i went to have a final look at the car the other day i asked if he had done the TDI crank sprocket converstion when he had rebuilt the engine and he told me know. I told him i herd they were a problem and he replyed that he always put a new sproket on when changing the timing belt and he never had a problem. What i would really like to know is if this guy is pulling my leg. or if what hes saying is the truth.I would also like to know how much it would cost to have this changed too a TDI crank sproket?

I have done lots of them without the crank mod,and they worked fine.If you pay attention to the proper procedures,they usually last OK.

I still recommend doing the crank mod if at all possible.

Who are you dealing with in NB? I'm in Saint John, and have been dealing with Alpine Motors lately... they won't steer you wrong.

I'm dealing with Foreign Car&RV service just outside moncton. I have asked around and here nothing but good about the guy who owns the shop and as far as i know he has been 100% honest and very straight forward about everything so far.

i'd be less concerned if the original sprocket was still in place than if it was replaced with a new one. That's a lot of torque to put on, even with the luxury of a hoist. Best bet, convert to TDI sprocket and have peace of mind. It's an awful damned expensive proposition if it lets go and the valves hit.

It's always nice to see/hear a fellow Maritimer (especially from Moncton) on the Net.
Are you talking about the guy who's located near Scoudouc or some else. Because if it is him, I never delt with him personaly but heard good things and bad things, so be careful in your purchase. Has for the TDI mod, I think your going to have a harder time in Moncton finding someone to do it. I don't live in Moncton no more and I'm not sure if anybody out there really know's how to properly accomplish that particular mod.(Don't quote me on that). That mod can be very expensive but again if you really want a MK3 TD its good to have that piece of mind in knowing that you wont bombard your engine to the ground. If I was in your situation I'd call local engine shops, talk with key mechanics in the area (Dave Biddington at AutoBahn Auto Haus) and find out if anybody can do this locally and without removing the crank from the engine.

Anyways good luck for with your search and your purchase.

you could haul out your crank and ship it to toronto. there's a good crank shop here that has done several tdi sprocket mods for me. it's around 250 plus the sprocket and bolt.

Well guys thanks for all the input, just so you know I bought the car and its sitting restfully in my fathers shop wayting for work to begin.
As for the crank sproket I plan on keeping a close eye on it for now and making a final decesion on it later.
Tomorrow night i get to start the wonderfull task of changin my heater core which i understand is an 8 hour job, but if il goes well il have heater core, stereo instaled and paint job by the middle of next week.

they all fail, sooner or later. from what I've seen, once they start to go, you've got very little time (hours) to find it's final parking spot before the bill gets really big.

Some people notice the crank pulley wobbling... and some people notice an erratic idle. Some people notice the sound of pistons hitting valves.

FWIW, you won't need to have the crank sent to Toronto to have it machined. It is being done in NB. I know both local VW shops in Saint John are having a local machine shop fix the crank.

Pulley wobble is the first sign,and they usually go quickly without warning after that.

I can also do them here in the Toronto area if anyone needs one done,and the pricing is much less than most others are doing it for.Doesn't matter if the crank is already damaged or not.I usually ahve one or two sitting on the shelf for quick turnaround.

Another warning sign is symptoms of improper injection timing. Hard starting, smoke, lack of power...
