Over at the other VW Diesel site they are putting gear sets in 02A and 02J transmissions. They are using the .717, .681 and the .658.
the .681 they are sourcing from a Transporter 02A transmission (it has a really high FD). I don't know where the .658 is coming from (it needs mods to fit).
Regardless, I know these don't fit in the 020, I've asked and told no.
With 020 you have some really strange options if you are willing to go for the 4speed. You can get the 4speed used in the Dodge Omni that will have a 3.42 FD (they used shorter gears) and then put in a really tall 4th gear....the .71 if you like. That would be pretty tall. You'd have to stay in 3rd for quite a bit, but if you were strickly a highway cruiser..well that would be good.
There was also a 3.29 that was supposedly available in some 4S five speeds someone mentioned (I can't find the source now), but I haven't been able to find a thing anywhere about it. Seems like Urban Legend.
If you could get this mythical 3.29 FD equipped 4S and you find this .681 gear from the Fox works...well that would be pretty cool. It would have no passing power, but the fuel economy on highway driving would be amazing.
There's also some neat stuff from a 1984 Audi 4000 that someone shared on the forums:
.684=013 311 159 B from 2M tranny
.641=093 311 159 C from 3Z tranny
.60=013 311 159 C from 2M/3M tranny
.537=093 311 159 A from QF tranny
No verification if these gear sets will work in the 020, 02A, 02J or 02M transmissions.
Regardless, a readily available 3.67 FD 5speed and a .71 5th should yield nice fuel economy.
