What do I need to convert my 1.6 diesel caddy to turbo? I know I can use the turbo from a 1.6 jetta....what exactly do I need to get from it?

the main thing is the oil squirters to cool the pistons. If you want to go through the trouble of getting your a heat reflective coating on the piston crown then that will definitely help keep the pistons cool when in boost. But it might just be easier to find a whole TD engine.

According to the SAE paper concerning the design of the TD engines, the oil squirters only drop the piston temp by about 30 degrees C. Are they really worth it?

non turbos don't like being turboed though, a guy i know pops headgaskets and stuff, but he runs his hard, always hauling stuff, so i dunno how true it is.

I've done a few conversions the the second last one I did ran 26psi of boost, a big aftercooler and lots of fuel. No problems. Install an egt gauge and keep your temps in check, there is nothing wrong with turboing a NA motor, you DON"T need to keep boost pressures down, you DON"T need to install an intercooler, you dont need oil squirters bla bla. Just get a GOOD quality FAST responding EGT gauge (read: not a VDO) and keep those temps in check!!

just curious, at what rpms are you guys reaching the 25 lbs of boost and higher, the 1.6 that i turboed and drilled oil squirters from the mains ended up cracking the bottom end of the block a third of the way through but i was running 25-27 lbs of boost at 3500 rpm, i will post pics next week

I think with my custom cams I hit 25 at about 3k, its hard to tell cause you go from 15-35 psi so quickly, but these engine rev to 6grand everyday.

so would you say that i had a bad block if it cracked?? it was a 12mm head bolt block from 1984 with about 175k on the clock

Too bad about your motor. Are you sure it wasn't cracked when you got it? I can't see it being boost related, but maybe a mechanical issue; unless of course it was just weak to begin with. There is no way to tell that unfortunately. What shape were the internals in before the rebuild? Maybe there was a hairline crack that just widened!?!?!?

Yeah, post your pics, it would be interesting to see.

Yeah there is definately some problem there, I dont think Iw oudl want to be drilling holes in my mains... maybe that was the cause, I need to see some pictures to get a good idea though. That really is a bummer man, but there is definately a problem cause I have run 35 psi on a completely stock bottom end with around 300,000 kms on the clock.

Well, I have been running 10psi on an NA bottom end for bit now. I did put an intercooler on jsut because I was using it for mostly highway miles. No probs. I have been using my eye as an egt gauge with comparison for smoke output. I have gotten an ability to know how fast the egts climb and drop from watching my vanagon egts.

You should have no problem adding the turbo stuff to an NA engine. Like others said, get a good egt gauge and live by it.

I have been driving my Vanagon Syncro lately and it regularly sees 25-28 psi. No intercooler. I would love to put one in, but that means big $$$. Air/water is whats needed in the van. EGTs stay around 1k F. Sometimes it gets up to 1300 but thats only for a few seconds. I am also running a K14 which helps spool time quite a bit. I can hit 30 psi @ 1800 rpm. I try to avoid it as I dont want the head to lift; after all the engine only has 2k miles on it.

I have trained myself to drive my Vanagon as fast as I can go without exceeding 1300 F for more than a few seconds.

i am also runing a stock 1.6D with all the gtd exterior components.
right now all is stock, 0.7 bar max.
running on 50% of vege oil.
soon to remome center mufler and add a vw touran i.c.(Big!)

sorry about the off topic but is there a problem to make some performance mods and run this fuel(50% svo)?

Did you do any measuring of EGTs before and after the intercooler?

did you cut out the bottom of the area behind the taillight?
