Breaks and rough running. Related?
« on: September 10, 2012, 05:11:14 pm »
Alright, this is beyond beyond.  Last week I had my breaks completely redone by a local tire and alignment shop.  Everything was working perfectly for about 75 miles, when (all at once) I lost power to my breaks, and a belt started squealing.  i drove it right home but it sounds like my breaks are squealing again and it's starting hard and running rough. so WTF? I pulled the vacuum pump off and it seems to be turning fine with suction at both ends. the engine was rebuilt by the dealer just a couple of months ago, could the timing belt have slipped? any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

84 diesel engine in a 92 gasser golf.

I'm no expert, but I'd check that timing.

If the vacuum pump or IM shaft stuck, the TB would squeal on the pulley and booster would loose power after the first application of the brakes. I imagine it could also cause the TB to slip .

I'd check the IM shaft and vacuum pump closely too.

what style pump?? on my own personal 81 diesel bunny back in high school... with diafram pump, loosened the 10mm lock nut inside... this jambed up the pump, making things squeel, and no oil pressure...

you did not have oil pressure issue...

so imo the pump is seizing up.. it was squeeling... and no power brakes... but lucky with oil pressure...

or... they broke brake booster at feet.. ceramic disk easy to break... and the squeel is the vac leak...
