Vacuum pump oil leaking / spraying everywhere
« on: August 06, 2012, 11:32:40 am »

Hey folks,

I'm feeling a bit short bus about this whole thing, but I figured I'd ask before I even go get messy.

I have a NA 1.6L motor from a Rabbit in my Suzuki Samurai.  She's got about 130k miles on the engine.  I recently tackled the vacuum pump (old space ship looking thing, not the newer rotary vane pump) for the $20 diaphragm swap.  Worked like a charm!  It took me a bit to get the pump back into place and bolted down, but it did.  Fired it up and sure enough, complete success!  Amazing the difference in the brakes!  My buddy says "Hey, you're pouring oil..."  ...  Sure enough a nice puddle under the truck, pop the hood, sure enough it sprayed all over the place from the pump.  Now, I was very careful putting it back in, but in my short-bus-head I am only now thinking - hey, shouldn't there be a gasket to replace when you pull the vacuum pump body?

So, I checked partsplaceinc and rockauto and I see nothing..  Is there one?  Am I missing something?  Could this just be in wrong?  Is it possible to get it in 'not all the way' or something?

Thanks in advance,

Dave

For what I wonder.. is the oil even under pressure there? I do believe it is just an o-ring to seal it.

did you use the vacuum pump with the coiled oil supply line?

or is it one that just comes right out, no oil lines to un-hook..

there is pressure to the gear..

My 1.6 engine has an o- ring at the bottom of the base on that vacuum pump.  If you don't get it tight it will leak.  You have to be sure the pump drops down all the way when you put it back.  Sometimes it hangs for some reason and it doesn't matter if you tighten the hold down nut tight or not there is still a gap betwee the engine and the pump base.  May just have to remove and reinstall.  But turn it over and look for an O ring while it is out.  Take the pump to an autoparts place or plumbing place and get one to fit the groove there.

if it doesnt drop down all the way, and seat fully on the oil pump shaft, then the oil pump will not turn. you will know real quick that your engine has no oil pressure..

it seated all the way, because his engine still runs.

he probably lost the o-ring that was stuck in the base of the pump..

did oil SPRAY everywhere? or was it more of a drip?

because there should be no pressure anywhere it can leak, unless you have a plugged crank case vent system..

I didn't open the hood while it was running, I shut it off and popped the hood.  When I saw the oil mess all around it I just shut the hood and called it a day.  I'm sure most everyone here knows that feeling of -ok, maybe tomorrow.- lol

I'm aware I have a tube from the intake to the valve cover that is free from restriction but I haven't done anything with the line that runs from the block to the side of this pump which as I understand is actually a vacuum point.

Maybe later today I'll take another look & post a pic.  Definitely could have dropped an o-ring considering how much swimming there is between the other coolant hoses, etc under my hood.

oh and... It was one bolt to remove it and pulled/turned and it came straight up.  No oil lines at all.  Plenty of oil down at it's gear of course.
