Jean Cretien is a Shawinigan home boy  :)

There seems to be a better supply of VW diesels out in Quebec and Ontario. I wonder how much getting a motor trucked out to Alberta would cost?

Told to me by someone who has done a bit of it:  You can ship a 4 banger anywhere in N-America on a pallet for $300.

I know for a fact that I can get a pallet of 30 computers from Ontario to BC for $210  ~800lbs

Bringing this thread back from the dead - a 1.6TD is needed for a conversion project. (Unless it costs to much to get the adaptors, in which case it'll be a gasser that's dropped in.)

wyldman told me that these prices were BS. Anyone able to confirm that?

We can't call around to junkyards in Canada to make sure that someone has one, and what it would cost, though - cell phones are locked out of international calls, and Canada is international...

In western Canada (BC) I would say that a good price for a complete running 1.6 TD would be $1000 +/- $200.  I called a auto wrecker that had a few advertised a while back and was told $2000 for a good runner with under 250,000 km.  There was a 'complete 88 Jetta TD 'needs work' advertised locally for $350....gone when I called.  All canuck bucks.

They look like they are cheaper in eastern Canada, makes sense as used cars are cheaper out that way too....'cause they rust out worse.

http://vwdiesel.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=3208  had one for sale out east, dont know if it sold or not.

BC VW forum:  www, vwdov.ca  you could try a WTB listing, it is trolled by some auto wreckers and well stocked enthusiats.  Must be similar forums in other provinces as well -anyone?

Right now.if you can find one, most of the wreckers want $2-2500 or more for a good running 1.6 or 1.9LTD.There were no 1.6L TD's anywere in stock in Ontario (according to their linked computer systems),and they had one 1.9L TD they wanted $2750 for (275,000 KM).

You best bet is to find a beater car with a good motor in it,and buy the whole thing.

Wyldman's experience has been my experience in SW Ontario.  I more or less get laughed at when I ask for a TD motor to re-build.

This add in local free ad paper:
GORDONS VW  Over stocked on DIESEL & TURBO DIESEL engines. Langley BC 604-533-3506
I have never dealt with them, might be worth a call.

Also a nice looking '87 Jetta with a 60k rebuilt TD for $2800
http://www.buysell.com/root/0/49207783/resultdetail.aspx
Thats about as cheap as I would expect to find a decent TD driver around here.  If it was truly rebuilt, its a good price, probably rust free if it spent its life in Victoria.

With time to look and wait, you can get a running 1.6TD for $1k, in a rush the same thing will be $2k from the wreckers.  I have seen rebuilt 1.6NA not selling for weeks in the $500 range.  I have yet to see a 1.9 TD engine advertised in BC, see a TDI every few months, mainly in Alberta.

I just sold a complete running 1.6TD jetta with bad rings and cylinders that needed bored out and fit with oversize pistons for $1000.  It seems that is what they are worth up here.  Car had some body issues that would prevent it from passing a safety check (rust through in the driver's side floor) and the exhaust was bad, but other than that and the engine problem it was in OK shape.

It also very important to buy from a reputable source.A lot of people will advertise and sell used motors, and they always seem to "forget" about any little problem it has before they sold it,and now your stuck with it.

A lot of people are buying these motors for swaps,or are on a tight budget. That budget goes out the window when you have to start repair your new motor.

We only sell motors that have been pulled from running cars, and tested. They are then torn down for inspection, and repaired as neccessary.Any stuff that needs too much work, gets a total rebuild.

(this is all MF code i'm talking about).

There are some older motors out there,in yards that aren't connected with the online locator system. Some have no idea what these are worth, and you can pick them up cheap.Problem is finding them. You have to run all over to find one,and it probably won't be in any condition to run,so you may not know what you are buying.

If anyone knows of any sitting in a yard cheap, let me know,as I will go get them and then offer them for sale here cheap,as there tons of people looking for them, even just for a spare or rebuildable core.

well, a number of reasons.  The first being that a new jetta TDI costs around 30K and I haven't got that kinda money right now.  The Cobalt was $13,200, slightly more affordable...with an aluminum block and dual overhead cams, it didn't seem that bad of a deal.

Why I sold the jetta:  I am sick of used rebuilt parts.  I bought a rebuilt injection pump that leaked, four rebuilt injectors, one of which was bad (the other three worked, amazingly enough), a rebuilt starter that lasted six months, and then the head gasket blew and when I took the head off I discovered that the cylinders were oval with lips at the top (the guy i bought the jetta from swore he rebuilt the bottom end, I think what he did was take the pistons out and re-ring them, he might have buffed the cylinders but I doubt he did even that judging from the large protruding lips that were at the tops of them - this is the sort of crap I am sick of, seems people like to cheap out on rebuilding things and I get stuck with junk that I pay good money for), and I decided that enough was enough.  I didn't want to spend money either rebuilding the block or getting a rebuilt short block, then have further issues with it or some other rebuilt thing down the road.  If and when I get back into diesels, I will be getting into TDIs for the simple reason that it is possible to get new parts for them.  I am just so tired of rebuilt stuff that doesn't work or last.  FYI:  The jetta was sold to a person who was aware of its problems so I didn't try to slip a bad engine under someone's radar.  The new owner is aware that the block is probably no good.
