1.6 NA Rabbit Pickup - Feeler
« on: April 14, 2012, 12:36:48 am »
This truck is not even mine... yet.

I'm trying to decide on whether to flip it, or pass. It has been sitting for the last few months.

Guy wants $1,000 o.b.o. as is. Tires look to be new, he said they have <1,000 miles on them. Tailgate looks very nice. Has original AC, all WAS working. Story is his son ran it out of oil. I spent 10 minutes talking to him and about another 10 minutes looking at the truck and taking pictures.

That is a dent/puncture  :'(

Wow. $1000 for that? I would not pay more than $400 for that. But that is only if I really really wanted a caddy.
Scrap price at best.

seems like quite a high price for a project at best..
92 Jetta GLI - Black, 1.6D w/ GT2056V turbo..
86 GTI - 4 Door, Med Twilight Gray, Tow Machine..
86 Audi Coupe GT - Tornado Red, All Stock.. WRECKED.
89 Toyota 4Runner - Dark Grey Metallic, LIFTED!

Turbo: exhaust gasses go into the turbocharger and spin it, witchcraft happens and you go faster.

If the body was a little less rusty. See if he will come down to 750. Do you have another motor to put in?  AC makes the car worth more at resale time.

I do have engine options... I was thinking about pulling the 1.6NA from my daily driver Caddy (the silver one in the background) putting it in this thing and away she goes. Or rebuilding a stock 1.6TD engine I have out of an 83 Jetta Coupe and putting it in this truck (or mine, if this one gets my NA).

No way would I pay more than $600-$700 for it. I am a bit surprised by the $400 though. I thought the tailgate alone was worth $200-$300? Another $200 for new tires (which I need for my truck anyway). And $200-$300 more for misc interior, engine, AC, shell, body parts.

I also have another NA that is completely torn down that I could rebuild, or the engine it comes with could be rebuilt.

The guy has money, he's not hurting to get rid of it BUT there isn't a big demand for these things out here in the condition it's in.

LOL.  Did Maine all of a sudden become a rust free state!   ???  That thing is easily worth a $1000.  Sure looks straight, clean, solid and even looks to have a "decent" interior.

Put it another way.  How many hours of quality rust work can you get these days for $1000 and I'm not talking about your brother's neighbors uncle.  I'm talking a pro job.  $80-100 per hour only buys you a day or a day and change. Certainly not much.  Unless your into doing your own body work buy something solid.

Have you guys seen the STUPID money that a rotbox Caddy brings on eBay? Seriously, I'd buy it, drop another motor in it and flip it on eBay to triple or quadruple my money.

I don't care where I live I would certainly never pay $1000 for any volkswagen that has the engine and tranny pulled and have any dreams of flipping it quickly for a profit.

That car has clearly been molested hard. To make it worth your time you would want to make at least 1k profit and that seems unlikely unless you have a free and clear motor to pop in.

I dunno. Just doesn't seem worth it.

As stated above, I DO have a few engines (and trans) that I could put in it, but out here it's hard to find a buyer. Maybe eBay would work, not sure. Never sold a car on eBay before. I think I'm going to offer him $500 and leave it at that. It no show truck but it's one of the cleanest all-original Caddy's I've ever seen around here.

I would go a bit higher based on the AC, the clean interior and the camper shell alone.  I would offer 700 and be willing to go to 850.  I can't seem much in the way of mechanical on it but think, very clean, new tires, (there's 300 saved alone), and the motor is really the biggest ? of the whole deal.  And you have that in hand.  A bit of body work and paint and I think you have your 1K profit if listed on EBay.

I think you are right about offering $500.
I think selling it on ebay would be a pain in the ass. You'll lose a lot in ebay fees and paypal fees. Probably what you lose by selling it locally is the amount you'd pay to sell it on ebay.

buy to drive/fix for self... else you will find no profit in rebuild to sell..

my opinions on things like this is simple...

buy... sell at same cost... OR find a buyer willing to PAY YOU to rebuild for them... but to think you can rebuild/resell for a profit.. not happening now a days..

10-15 years ago... 300$ truck.. rebuild.. so on.. yep you could make some coin... now.. 1k truck.. good used diesel set up dipped in gold 1500... add in brakes.. tires so on... you got a easily 3000 truck.. bEFORE your time..
