Yeah, Prothe.. Umm rule of thumb, if it sounds too cheap, it is!

As far as the bearings go, get the mains with the three piece thrust bearing..  there is a write-up in the FAQ as to why...

seen the "write" up, totally agree, got lots of years rebuilding engines on a commercial scale. just wondering if there IS an INEXPENSIVE route to go as I am no longer employed by a scam artist ;)

interesting, right vs write when you are lacking on restful sleep

BillyBob,  I use this as my starting point most times and just start working through the lists.  I have several that I start with depending on what I am looking for.  This is the best summary site I have bookmarked.  Give it a whirl.

I guess that means I endorse it .   http://www.cabby-info.com/parts.htm

That is the best I have found mains and the correct ones. Also, I am thinking of cleaning up the FAQ a bit, condensing and adding stuff. This isn't a bad idea. I maybe forced to do it now as I am starting the 1.6 again. I don't look for the cheapest stuff though, I look for the good stuff at a decent price. I obviously don't know where everything is the cheapest, but I like the site I linked to above...autohausaz or az autohaus whatever. It is easy for me to get free shipping even if I only need a 3.00 ignition switch I will buy oil filters for my car to make the 50.00 free freight. I can't really remember having trouble with any part they have sold and usually when frieght is factored in I never can do much better on price.

ok, so when using the separate thrust washers, are you getting two of them or four of them, two top two bottom?

as weird as this sounds, the single piece provides 360* of contact, just in a smaller contact? is there actual damage that has been seen by the single peice thrust bearing?

I had been using Arizona Autohaus, but this place seems to be beating them on price lately, and has warehouses closer to me:

I just looked for those mains, they didn't have them. The Mahle they had were cheaper, but the Mahle autohaus had were cheaper than the Glyco too. I didn't compare actual price it was close though, but like I said before, if you order over the 50.00 for free freight then usually for me autohaus wins.

The thing I liked about your site listed and some others I cannot think of now is they have parts that you can't find on autohaus. The IM seal carrier oring for one. Maybe they both have them, but I cannot find them on az.

Yes..  I should have snapped pics, I just scrapped an otherwise good crank because it had a groove worn in the thrust surface from one piece bearings.. This happened in the span of about 100K, and it was a very noticeable groove..  Could have been that someone rode the clutch too much or something like that, but all the more the difference is in cost it seems the 4 piece jobbie is the way to go.. And yes, you should be getting 4 halves of the thrust washer so that it will have 360 degree contact..

gotcha gotcha, sucks, Ive got the single peice halves :(  wonder if a used set would be available/ok to use?

Its weird, I have a ball mic to check bearings, Ive re-used bearings and put 50k miles on them before selling the vehicle in great condition with no noises and great oil pressure.

Ive even re-used PISTON rings, a heavy hone hash, and ONCE around the outside of the compression rings with some 800 grit paper and pulled HIGH compression numbers on gassers just barely broke in. No smoke problems, no oil consumption. Right now I have a set of mahle pistons with rings that have 1800 miles on them that I am thinking about re-using.

I know that on bearings if they measure good, really, they are fine, but what do you guys think (if I wasnt OP I would probably start a new thread for this)

I mean Ive seen re-used headgaskets which I think is CRAZY, stretch bolts maybe? I have a prothe timing belt and tensioner that I plan on using FOR THE MOMENT. I dont have timing covers yet so will swap belts when I find covers. first fire will be on a custom stand not in a car, just gotta find a junk bellhousing piece for timing purposes.

really want to put this engine together, but its almost overwhelming. I can get a complete 22re engine rebuild kit, bearings, pistons, oil pump, the works for like $300 bucks.

For the timing purposes..

The timing mark is directly in between the two upper bolt holes that hold the trans too the block. So if you were to measure a point from both bolt holes, the center of that would be where the TDC mark would be on the inside of the timing hole.

cool cool, I do think I will be in the market for a set of ARP head studs and possibly rod bolts, how do you tell if you have TTY rod bolts? and the 12 point headbolts are stretch style right?
