Sounds perfectly normal. A 1.9TD has the same oiling system and mine has similar pressures to yours. 17-20 idling @900rpm, 35@2000rpm and 50@3000rpm. I use 5w40 syn, your pressures are a bit higher with 15w40 dino juice, but in the ballpark.

5w40 after break in should be fine. My oil pressure varies alot with outside and engine temperature, don't worry about it. After long interstate drives in the heat of summer you'll likely see pressures as low as 10-15psi at idle, but they come back up as the oil cools...

We've had the same crazy weather, I was outside painting machinery in January! We're also paying for it now....

Yes, that's OK.

The preferred oil on the TDIClub for VE TDIs is Mobil 1 Truck & SUV 5W40. Delvac 1 5W40, John Deere's 5W40 diesel oil, and Caterpillar's 5W40 diesel oil are all the same thing.
1986 Volkswagen Golf | 1.6L NA diesel | 5spd manual | Deep Cosmic Blue (LE5C) | aack, it's a parts car, now, too!
1992 Mazda Miata | 1.6L DOHC gasser | 5spd manual | Classic Red (SU)

I'm fiddling with my vw vento (jetta3 called vento in europe). 1,9 td AAZ.
Just started it up yesterday after a mayor overhaul. Tuned it some. Installed a oil pressure gauge (never used one on this engine type before). I was chocked when oil pressure dropped to 16 psi at 600rpm idle after warmup. Man its ruined, I'll have to rebuild it again!

Removed oil pan and checked (plastic gaged) main crank bearing it was ok, checked oil pump, good as new. I found no trace of metals in oil or pan. So i guess it didn't take any damage.

Are you guys sure of that oil pressure? It sounds really low.

Using 15w40 oil, when I drained it it was fully warmed up and was thin (viscosity? word thing..) as water or milk. That didn't feel right either. But that same sort of oil have served me well for a few yrs.

If anyone's interested I have som pictures of this projekt:

Normal oil pressure (from bentley manual) is 2 bar (29psi) at 2000rpm with an oil temperature of 80ºC.

Your 16 psi at idle with the engine warm sounds normal to me. The cylinder head port will often give lower readings than the oil filter base port. The hydraulic lifters tend to bleed the pressure down. The pressure specified in the bentley manual is measured at the oil filter.

If it gets below 7-8 at idle and sets off the oil light I would suspect the intermediate shaft bearings, they are the most common cause of low oil pressure.
